It was a weeklong celebration (February 20-26) that brought all PechaKucha organizers, presenters, and attendees together, with a focus on highlighting all of the amazing cities that make up the global PechaKucha community.

Reverend Henry Tōryō Adams grew up in Buffalo, Minnesota. As an undergraduate student at St. Olaf College, he began his study of Buddhist scriptures and first considered pursuing the path to the ministry. After receiving an M.A. in Buddhist Studies from the University of Michigan in 2003, he worked for a few years in Miyazaki, Japan before pursuing his ministerial studies at the Chuo Bukkyo Gakuin Buddhist Seminary in Kyoto. He began serving the Oxnard Buddhist Temple and Buddhist Church of Santa Barbara on April 1, 2010.

Eric Adjetey Anang, a carpenter and artist, exhibits his coffin work all over the world. Yes, you read that correctly -- coffins -- but his are made as artistic references either to who the person as they lived or to his/her spirit animal. Humour, colorfulness, playfulness and political statements are often the subject matter here. Eric questions the necessity of leaving life only in sorrow, and encourages the celebration of a full life.

Terry Buntrock, who is the organizer for this celebration of creativity, gives us just a sampling of the over 130 events that are jam packed into the festival. However in the lead up to preparing her Pecha Kucha presentation she was called home to New Zealand and had to prepare for her mother’s death. In her presentation she shares some of that journey and some of the beautiful drawings that eventuated.

Poster for PKN Shenzhen Vol. 3
In the US, the 4th of July is a huge holiday, and in Shenzhen, that date marks a celebration of another kind: PechaKucha Night Vol. 3! It will take place at Idutang Oct Loft (previously knowns as C-Union), and kicks off at 19:30. The poster was designed by Ana Rio.
Poster for PKN Koszalin Vol. 6
It's really turning into a PechaKucha poster celebration today (see our previous posts covering Cape Town and Concepcion) with a third one coming our way, this time for the upcoming PechaKucha Night in Koszalin Vol. 6, which is going to be a bit different. As organizer Gall Podlaszewski tells, they "got invited to run a PechaKucha in an extremely nice venue a few kilometers outside of the town, in a century old arboretum."
The Power of 20
The number 20 is of course a special one for us -- it does form the basis of the entire format (20 images x 20 seconds) -- and we're always happy to see cities reach that special Vol. 20. Brussels is the latest city to hit the milestone, and how's this for a celebration of 20s: PechaKucha Night in Brussels Vol. 20 is held on November 20, with a start time of 20:20! Here's wishing Alok and his team a terrific event, and with already 400 people having pre-registered, it should be a memorable one. The photo above, by Rex Features, is from this article.

ABC Coffee and the Third Wave
“Third wave is not just about beards and blue bottles — it’s about the celebration of coffee.” Alvin Cheung is the Chief Coffee Officer at ABC Coffee, a Tokyo-based subscription service for organic coffee beens. In “ABC Coffee and the Third Wave” from PKN Tokyo Vol. 120, he extols the beauty and benefits of consuming lightly roasted, single-origin, locally sold coffee beans.
Arts and Crafts of the State Fair
Butter-sculptures of local beauty princesses, impressionist quilting, homemade cakes from scratch. Philip Berger discusses of the arts and crafts that he discovered at the Minnesota State fair. In "Arts and Crafts of the State Fair" from PKN Chicago Vol. 32 we learning that there is no clear definition of art and craft, and that the celebration of locally grown agriculture is truly a sight to see.
City Focus: Brooklyn
We're putting this week's "City Focus" on PKN Brooklyn, who is co-hosting NYCxDesign, May 8–19, 2015. NYCxDesign is citywide celebration of design, with events throuought the city showcasing all disciplines of design, with a special PKN scheduled for May 18th at Kinfolk 94. A PechaKucha Fit for a Queen
This week's PKN Story comes from Denmark's 2nd largest city, Aarhus, where a on June 20th, the city celebrated the opening of an architecturally exquisite library and media house overlooking the harbour, and attended by none other than the Queen of Denmark! PechaKucha Aarhus participated in the celebration by hosting a PKN featuring seven of the favorite speakers from the last year! Check out some photos from the event!
