Rethinking the Newark Waterfront

BY JAE SHIN
@ VOL 18 ON MAY 18, 2017

Architectural and urban designer Jae Shin talks in this PechaKucha presentation about how we might advocate for accountable development of our cities through imaginative, community-focused design and planning practices.

Jae Shin is a partner at Hector, an urban design, planning & civic arts studio, where recent projects have included a memorial for an eco-feminist nun, a riverfront park, and a large-scale exhibition commemorating the 350th anniversary of the founding of Newark, NJ, including a crowd-sourced scale model. Jae has recently served as an Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow at New York City Housing Authority, where she facilitated the agency’s efforts to define and implement design principles for safe, clean and connected communities. As an educator, Jae has led design studios at New Jersey Institute of Technology & Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Susana Soares

Not only did the second edition of PechaKucha Night in Trieste -- held late last year -- attract over 600 attendees, it also featured an intriguing mix of presenters. The event's organizer, EXTRASMALL's Vanna Coslovich, tells us about Susana Soares and her "BEE'S PROJECT." We had more than 600 people at PKN Vol. 2 in Trieste. The location was really fascinating: the old wholesale fruit and vegetable market on the city waterfront. Every day, early in the morning, the place serves for selling wholesale. It was the very first time the market opened its doors for a creative event. Presenters came from North Italy, as well as Slovenia, Austria, and Great Britain. The most original presentation was "BEE’S PROJECT" by Susana Soares, a London-based Portuguese designer. She employs design as a tool to explore future technological implications for public engagement and awareness. Have you ever heard that bees have a phenomenal odor perception? Susana Soares explained to the public of PKN Trieste how the bees can be trained within minutes using Pavlov’s reflex to target a specific odour, and their range of detection includes pheromones, toxins, and disease diagnosis. "BEE’S PROJECT" explores how we might co-habit with natural biological systems and use their potential to increase our perceptive abilities. We have always co-existed with these systems, but their potential was unknown. Susana’s work was also exhibited in “Design and the Elastic Mind” at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, curated by Paola Antonelli, before becoming part of the permanent collection of the museum. Below, some more images from Susana's presentation.

Performance Arcade Session 2013

We're revving up for our first PKN session of 2013 with our annualoutdoors Performance Arcade Session in collaboration with the Playground (NZ Ltd) http://theplaygroundnz.com/ The Arcade venue comprises a series of containers featuring installations, performance art, live music, and works that travel through, or occupy spaces along the stunning Wellington Waterfront.  We're looking to feature our surprise presenters spot first trialled at our final session of 2012 - 5 people who volunteer on the spot to talk to images they've never seen before.   This proved to be one of the highlights of the October 2012 session.   Our brave presenters were all  from overseas - Russia, New York, Sweden, Chile and Germany.  New Zealanders were far too shy for the challenge.  We definitely need to have this presentation after the beer break  - not before - so more people can pluck up some 'Dutch courage' aided and abetted by the delights of the Performance Arcade bar!   The PKN Welly and Playground NZ crews are crossing fingers and toes for a fine and warm evening
