Let's Fall In Love With Tea

Ratna Somantri's first encounter with tea was from her mother, who always serve tea to the family. During her time at Le Cordon Bleu, Sydney, she continues to learn about tea from all over the world. She established Tea Lovers Community with some other fellow tea lovers in Indonesia. Currently, she is also the Chairman of the Tea Board of Promotion of Indonesia for 2014-2017. Ratna often invited as a speaker in various tea-related events and enjoyed teaching classes through tea at Tea Institute. In her presentations, Ratna shared her knowledge about tea history in the world and in Indonesia in particular. Indonesia is one of the largest tea producing country, but the awareness for the tea culture itself is still low. Through her community, Ratna believes that Indonesian teas should be more appreciated in our own country. Her dream is that our best teas should be available and enjoyed in every Indonesian home and that their growing popularity will prosper local tea producers.

Three Cups of Tea

Emma Exley traces the history of Africa's last colony, the Western Sahara, located on the continent's northern coast. Through images of traditional Sahrawi architecture and culture, we learn about the challenges of desert living, and how something as small as a cup of tea has massive significance in the every day life of the Sahrawi people. 

Emma Exley is a creative designer, former art educator, and diving enthusiast. After first discovering PechaKucha Night in Chicago in 2007, it was only a matter of time before she founded the Brooklyn chapter in 2014.

Belinda Bigold is a local entrepreneur; the co-founder and CEO of High Tea Bakery. Her mission in business and in life is to provide those around her with the ingredients for a delicious life. Belinda holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba, is a former competitive cyclist, and a lifelong traveller. She is currently obsessed with vintage motorbikes, but has yet to learn how to ride one.

Bill Wood, Eldora Hoover, and Their Famous Friend

Jeffery Schielke, longtime mayor and local historian of Batavia, Illinois, shared his reflections on Batavia’s well-known educators, Eldora Hoover and Bill Wood, their collection of crosses, and their interest in Japanese customs and traditions. In their search for supplies for the Japanese tea ceremony, Eldora and Bill discovered a store in Chicago owned by Jun Toguri and his daughter, Iva. As their friendship grew, Iva revealed the story of an American citizen trapped in Japan during World War II—her story. Once called Tokyo Rose, she was imprisoned in the United States for treason. Ultimately, President Gerald R. Ford granted a full and unconditional pardon to Iva Toguri, which restored her U.S. citizenship.

Tea is the second most common drink in the world and it has been in Japan for around for over 800 years. Through time it has developed distinct culture and traditions.

Very High Tea at PKN Groningen

For its upcoming PechaKucha Night Vol. 12 (September 20), Groningen is describing the event with the title "Very High Tea," and here's why: PechaKucha Groningen strikes again. And this time, at tea time. A very, very high tea: come join us at the 23th floor of Tasman Tower. "But, that building's not even finished yet!" you say? You are right. No walls. Great heights. PKN Tel Aviv in the News

We've mentioned a few times on this blog how Tel Aviv is always host to these amazing gatherings -- usually 2000+ attendance -- and here's a piece from the Haaretz newspaper that drives the point home. Note that the next PechaKucha Night in Tel Aviv (Vol. 11) happens this Wednesday (February 11) at Hangar 11.

The PKN Sendai Team is Safe

It took a while, but we've finally gotten word from the organizers of PechaKucha Night in Sendai -- the hardest hit area following the March 11 quake -- and they are all safe. Led by Daisuke Suzuki of Hiroto Suzuki Architects & Associates, we've been told that all the people who work at the office are safe, but some of them have lost their homes. The damage to the city is not as bad as near the coast, but there are many damaged buildings and homes. In a coincidence that we still have a hard time believing, they told us that they went to view a potential venue just two days before the earthquake, and that they were planning to have their first PKN on April 16, which is the day we are holding our Global PechaKucha Day - Inspire Japan event. The PKN Sendai team is hoping to participate in the global event somehow, although for now finding a venue is of course an issue. We'll keep everyone posted as we find out more.

Maryna Trepova, partner in Siegel HR in Ukraine and CIS, business trainer, Siegel Human Resource in Kiev, made ​​a brilliant presentation "Multicoloured Virtual Team: How to Manage It" from PKN Dnipropetrovsk IT::Education. 8000 at PKN Tel Aviv!

The biggest PechaKucha Nights are always held in Tel Aviv, where each volume attracts an audience of 4000 -- done over 2 events in one evening -- but the city's latest edition trumped that number. Since the events always sell out within minutes of tickets going on sale, for Vol. 16 they decided to still do 2 sessions in one evening, but to then double that over 2 nights. Result? PechaKucha Night Vol. 16 in Tel Aviv attracted a whopping 8000 over its 4 sessions! Here's organizer Anat Safran with more on the event: We've been having a "double-pecha" night for quite a while now, with two shows on the same night and 2000 people at each presentation. Yet, tickets were sold out in minutes and many people weren't able to come. So this time we made a "double-double pecha" with two shows per night and two nights in a row. This is a total of 8000 people! We opened our tickets sales and our site crashed immediately. Once it was recovered, tickets sales went on just great, and for the first time ever there were tickets available for 5 days! Until they sold out 2 days before the event... It was quite an adventure putting on the same event four times, the presenters were just great, and the public got a unique experience each time. We had some amazing stuff going on stage: A designer who works with smells, a photographer who told the story of a special woman through photo albums she has found at the flee market, a couple of cinema directors who recorded kids interpretation to modern art pieces on audio guides at the museum, a group who has invented a new kind of performance style mixing live cinema, theater, and puppetry, a graphic designer who created the branding for an imaginary Israel in Africa, a performance group who investigate the art of kissing. They invited the couples in the public to stand up and kiss in the middle of their presentation and it was amazing! A choreographer who created a special piece where dancers would act on stage according to public choices made live by voting. A photographer and journalist who told the incredible story of sesamy, a hungarian artist who took a hilarious series of photos of grannies in Tel Aviv, and a magnificent singers band, a trio of girls, inspired by the harmonic music of the 30s. English = Time + Tenacity + Tears

“English is a frankenstein's monster. It's a hodgepodge abomination of rules that we break all the time.” In English = Time + Tenacity + Tears from PechaKucha Night Tokyo’s 133rd Volume, student and literary enthusiast Ṣeyi Adebanjo, discusses her frustration with the “global language”. The real world is full of puzzles, all of which are more or less systematic. To her the English language itself is the most complex puzzle of all. Though she found learning the convoluted language to be a challenge, her tenacity as both a bibliophile and writer eventually paid off; the end product was worth it.
