Caged Humans in Bali

@ VOL 1 ON OCT 28, 2014

Listen to Ingetje Tadros's stories - what she sees and feels is expressed fully through the words and her photographs. Through her photographs, Ingejte speaks about the families and people whom she met in Bali. Their stories of dealing with mental illness and forced to live in locked rooms. The experience has left her realizing that she takes her own freedom for granted.

Cotonoha Artspace + Cafe

We highlight this photo -- found on Flickr and taken by Elizabeth Taylor -- of the Cotonoha Artspace + Cafe in the city of Ginowan in Okinawa not because it's a beautiful photo (although it is that), but because it also happens to be the venue for the PechaKucha Night series that happens in that city. In fact, the gallery/cafe is run by Daryl Mitchell, who also happens to the PKN Ginowan organizer. PKN Ginowan Vol. 3 was held just a few days ago -- see the list of presenters on the official event page -- and we'll hopefully get some photos to share soon.

A Cafe Where You Fabricate Things, Everything About Aperture, and Reports on Bangkok and Dubai

Presentations With a name like FabCafe -- and with a location in Tokyo's Shibuya district -- you may think that the "Fab" stands for "fabulous," but instead it's short for "fabricate." This presentation (from PKN Tokyo Vol. 93) by Toshimasa Kawai will reveal some of the amazing things that you can produce on a visit. Hint: It involves a laser cutter. This presentation (in German, from PKN Regensburg Vol. 2) by Johannes Paffrath could also be called: "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Aperture But Were Afraid to Ask." Posters There are no new additions to the Tumblr blog today, so instead we highlight this poster for next Tuesday's (July 24) PKN Halifax Vol. 11 -- you'll find more details and the list of presenters with links on the official event page. Links We have a couple of links to share today, that act as event reports for PKN Bangkok's recent relaunch (pictured above) and PKN Dubai Vol. 11. "PechaKucha: Unique idea sharing event brings folks back to the Nest" [Coconuts Bangkok]"PechaKucha Night Dubai: The 11th Edition - A Convention of Creative Minds" [Khaleejesque]Calendar Here's what you can expect in terms of weekend action. First, tonight (Friday, July 20), there's Tijuana's very first PKN, as well as PKN Waterville Vol. 8. On Saturday night, Taos hosts its Vol. 7. And if you'd like to plan the week ahead, on Monday you can expect PKN Fresno Vol. 16 and PKN San Jose Vol. 7.

Poster for PKN Knoxville Vol. 9

Beth Meadows is a talented local artist who is well known for her creative abstractions of found objects, architectural spaces, and historic structures.  She volunteered her time to design the poster for Knoxville's 9th Pecha Kucha and for that we are grateful!    She choose this painting for the poster for the architectural qualities and proportion of the space - perfect for the integration of PKN into Architecture Week!  The couple [and their cats] are taking time from thier busy schedules to sit quietly and listen.  Sometimes PKN can get a little rowdy but the reason we all attend is to listen to a passionate community member share thier craft with us.  It is an inspiring evening of reflection and gratitde.   Beth Meadows graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BFA in Studio Art in 2007. She has lived and worked in Knoxville since then and currently manages The Salvage Room for the non-profit Knox Heritage, receiving and selling historic building materials. She is also the Director, as well as an artist, of 17th Street Studios, a work space for thirteen artists near downtown Knoxville. To view more of her work visit her site

iPads and Innovations

One of the speakers at the last event was Alexander Ryzhkov — head of the «November» and the project «Vyhodnoj», which highlights the fresh and up to date information about events and places in Dnipropetrovsk. He talked about owners of different cafes or restaurants that face with problems connected with POS terminals, because they are quite expensive and inconvenient. Alexander and his team offer a great solution — POS terminal based on the iPad. Intuitive, user-friendly and with very affordable price, it simplifies the work of the waiters, which saves both their time and the time of visitors.

The Great Coffee Caper

"Help us find the last [missing] Fujita panel so we can rebuild the Brazil Cafe in Ginza!"In "The Great Coffee Caper " from Tokyo's Brazilian Lifestyle Powered by PechaKucha, Brazilian Ambassador to Japan,  André Corrêa do Lago shares his piqued curiosity when, as a teenager in Sao Paulo, acquiring a peculiar book of Brazilian architecture that had been published in Japan, it's last page stunning him with images the "Brazil Cafe", a coffee house in a posh corner of Tokyo for its most chic denizens, inside which was decorated with contemporary furniture, its walls adorned by a magnificent mural painted by Japan's most famous artist of the time, Léonard Tsugouharu Foujita. Ambassador Lago's interest in the book, and in the cafe, never wavered and when appointed to his position in Japan, and in an effort to re-capture Japan's shared love for Brazilian coffee, he commissioned his staff to research the cafe's history, uncovering a caper of a tale, which has led to the quest for a missing painting and a restoration of Tokyo's once legendary "Brazil Cafe."

The View Behind the Cafe

"Every week there are new items, objects, things, stuff that people abandon that people put out, leave out, the flotsam and jetsam of the modern age. It's just back there, new stuff all the time. In The View Behind the Cafe from PechaKucha Night Dayton Vol. 32, James Luckett observes the parking lot behind his workplace.  His photos transform the invisible into new compositions, from abandoned dolls to shadows on concrete.
