David Benjamin

Founder, The Living in Brooklyn

Standing at the Crossroads of Biology, Computation, and Design

PRESENTED ON MAY 18, 2015
IN BROOKLYN @ VOL 4

David Benjamin is Principal at The Living, a design firm that brings architecture and design to life — literally. David expounds upon some of the amazing projects his firm uses to combine natural, biological intelligence and artificial intelligence to find new solutions to old problems.

Whether it’s using living mussels and sensors to understand changes in water quality, or growing biodegradable bricks using the root-like structures of mushrooms and agricultural waste, and then building a structure using 10 thousand of these, the projects in action are a small window into our future.

This was "Presentation of the Day" on May 29th, 2017.

3D-Printing Biology

BY CORRIE VAN SICE
@ VOL 23 ON SEP 20, 2013

Corrie Van Sice works at the intersection of design, engineering, and biology. She speaks on the under-discussed dilemma of "innovation" run amok. Corrie posits that if more scientists were to operate like artists (in that they could explore their studies without university or corporate control), development in their field might take a new and exciting direction.

"Presentation of the Day" on October 10, 2013.

30,000 Foot View of Biology

BY BRITT WRAY
@ VOL 27 ON NOV 05, 2013

Britt Way, a radio documentray producer in Toronto, uses her biologist background and radio skills to talk about the development of biology today, especially concerning deextinction. As many of us know, we are living in the Sixth Extinction and our need to play God is more pressing then ever. She shows solutions to right the wrongs that we have created in several interesting and unconventional ways.

The School of Poetic Computation

BY ZACH LIEBERMAN
@ VOL 1 ON AUG 14, 2014

Zach Lieberman talks about technological inventions, the School of Poetic Computation, and drinking wine and arguing.

Fed up with how the school system is treating its students, Zach decided to create his own school that allows the students to be more involved with eachother, and to learn from each other.

Artificial Intelligence

BY JULES BROVONT
@ VOL 21 ON FEB 16, 2017

In Honor of World Science Day for Peace and Development:

"I don't know what the future of artificial intelligence is, I don't think anybody really does..."

In Artificial Intelligence from PechaKucha Night Madison, WI Vol. 21Jules Brovont will clear away some common misconceptions about what artificial intelligence is, what it isn't, and what its capabilities are. Are you already using AI without realizing it? Where is AI taking us as a society, and how is it already changing our lives? Jules will scratch the surface of these fundamental questions, and catch a glimpse of how this technology is already beginning to shake the foundation of our civilization.
