Mary Heathcott has worked in the contemporary art world for nearly 20 years. Throughout her career she has been challenged to explain, translate, defend, evaluate and inspire support for art that often is challenging, thought-provoking, and even ugly. In her talk, she presents lessons contemporary art has taught her: whether it’s playful, somber or obscure, art champions experimentation, ideas, dialogue and more.

Music Release as Art Object

Gary Liu is a lecturer in the Department of Art and Art History at UH Manoa, and a performer with the Drowning Dreamers Band. As the band released its debut album, he hoped to combine those worlds by enlisting the collaboration of student, faculty, and community artists, graphic designers and printmakers, to create a unique, tangible object that is rare in today's musical landscape.
