Rethinking multimodal transportation

Nicola Barbisan, Victor Martial and Natalya Yankovska present us their vision of a multimodal station for the city of Nantes.
Train stations are no longer stand-alone terminus, but need to be fully connected with the city, and have to combine various existings transportation networks to achieve a high level of performance in order to play an active role in the urban life.
The transformation of Nantes train station involves rethinking the act of travel in all its spatial and temporal dimensions. Thus the goal was to design a performant yet comfortable transportation hub, a new architectural landmark aiming to make commute and travel more efficient and simple, for both pedestrians, cyclists or commuters. {in French}

The School of Poetic Computation

Fed up with how the school system is treating its students, Zach decided to create his own school that allows the students to be more involved with eachother, and to learn from each other.

Andy Milligan is a spatial researcher and educator at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee. He leads the Interior Environmental Design programme, and, since 2013, has used Rebar’s improvisational PARK[ing] Day initiative as a platform to introduce design students to collective creative action and urban interventions at a local / global scale.

Maddie Bozik is the president of Maddie’s Mitten March, a charity she started in 2009, when she was ten years old. The goal of Maddie’s Mitten March is to collect, clean, and distribute winter clothing to those in need. Today, Maddie has a retrofitted (and repainted) school bus that goes around the community as part of her project to give winter clothing to anyone that needs it.

Rethinking Resettlement

"How can we make our endeavors clear and approachable enough that we can actually contribute to the public debate at a very high level?"

In Rethinking Resettlement from PechaKucha Buffalo Vol. 18, Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University at Buffalo, Erkin Özay, reviews some of the social and design issues involved in rehousing and supporting Buffalo, New York's new Americans. Özay's Spring 2016 UB graduate studio explored the potential for temporary and long-term housing for newly arrived refugees and immigrants, as well as the role of supporting institutions, community assets, and reimagining the existing housing stock. Özay's project investigates "compassionate urbanism." He is interested in how groups of limited means--new and existing residents--support each other through careful intersections.
