"Colour often comes down to strategically finding the moments that change in a faster time scale." 

In Playing with Colour from PechaKucha Night Buffalo Vol. 15, the artist/designer team of Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster (known as BACKOFFICE) talk about their recent project, LINE GARDEN. In 2014 Jamrozik and Kempster used 500 wooden stakes to weave a mile of colourful plastic barrier tape into an occupiable, abstract field at the International Garden Festival at Reford Gardens/Les Jardins de Métis. They speak about the making of the installation, LINE GARDEN, and it’s adaptation for the 2015 edition of the festival, together with other related projects.

Colour Decoded

A surgery removing a tumour along with half of Carly Blackman's thyroid in 2012 was the beginning of a 2-year journey of researching, writing and designing her book called Colour Decoded. This is a book written for artists and designers explaining the science behind colour in a way a "right-brained" individual can easily understand. Furthermore it discusses how colour has a massive impactive on our hormones, body and behaviours. Her exploration with colour tries to bridge the two worlds of Art and Science, which have been isolated from each other in our present day education system.

Realizing Good Ideas

"It's not enough to have a good idea. To realize that good idea is very difficult, and that's what I work hard to do".

In Realizing Good Ideas from PechaKucha Night Buffalo Vol. 14Chris Siano shares how he uses digital design and fabricatio to make things better, whether it is a public art installation, a student sculpture project, a building or a neighborhood. For the past twelve years he has served as an Instructional Support Technician in the University at Buffalo Department of Art. In 2005 he formed The Foundry Group Inc. - a company specializing in art and architectural fabrication. And in 2012, in partnership with his brother Matthew, he formed HES Properties - a real estate development company focusing on development of mixed-use properties on Buffalo's West Side. All of these endevours are conduits for great ideas in his community to come to fruition.

In The Myth of Perfection (Tolerance is a Matter of Plus or Minus, Choose Your Degree) from PechaKucha Night Buffalo Vol. 15, Buffalo-based artist and engineer Alexandra P. Spaulding reflects on her artistic practice, her love of minimalism, and her eventual acceptance of inevitable imperfections. Examining the notions of tolerance and how exacting to the millionth decimal point does not equal perfection, Spaulding focuses both on the visual arts (Minimalism), her own practice (aurally immersive installation art), engineering and manufacturing, and how the conflux of these three schools of thought have made her more accepting of 'the happy accident' and a better artist.

In Reversal of Fortune from PechaKucha Night Buffalo Vol. 15, interdisciplinary artist and educator Stephanie Rothenberg talks about her recent project "Reversal of Fortune," a series of robotic gardens that examine the intersection of social media, finance and philanthropy. In these gardens plants represent recipients of charitable acts and loan borrowers in economically challenged regions. Through this lens the complex relationship between human life and economic growth is made visible.

A Wall and A Column: 2 Projects

"A wall and a column...what they have in common is an interest in looking at the cultural agency of traditional building materials and their ability to speak."

In A Wall and A Column: 2 Projects from PechaKucha Buffalo Vol. 16, architect and University at Buffalo Peter Reyner Banham Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor Ang Li presents a pair of site specific installations that explore the cultural agency of vernacular building materials. Horror Vacui is an installation in Lisbon, Portugal that examines the ability of building facades to “speak” through the medium of the Portuguese “azulejo” - hand-painted ceramic tiles often depicting scenes from historic or civic events. The piece explores the narrative potential of bricks and mortar within contemporary image sharing and crowdsourcing platforms. No Frills is an installation in Buffalo, New York that stems out of an interest in the industrialized production of terracotta in the 19th century as a new kind of ornamental language. In a semi-abandoned Chevrolet Factory by the architect Albert Kahn, a 13-foot column interrupts the existing grid of the assembly floor,  acting as a bridge between the vast scale of obsolete industry and the human scale of the architectural ornament.
