The Waxing Soul

BY JOANNA GOULD
@ VOL 21 ON NOV 10, 2016

Joanna Gould is a Maine artist working in the ancient wax encaustic technique.  Encaustic literally means burning in, and encaustic painting involves heated wax and a process of fusing many layers. Fusing oil pigments and found objects with layers of translucent beeswax and resin,  Joanna creates works of art that have been described as dreamlike and mystical, infused with the purest light. Highly influenced by place, the light and dark in her paintings dance with seasonal hues and shapes to suggest nature in its most modest form. Joanna started her creative career over 15 years ago, studying graphic design at the Art Institute of Boston. Her professional career started in corporate branding and evolved to publishing and then advertising. She later studied landscape architecture. Joanna has exclusively been a part-time freelance designer for the past six years, as well as a full-time mother and wife. Tonight she will share the story behind her work, in The Waxing Soul
