A GARA COL TEMPO SENZA OROLOGIO – La Percezione del Tempo Negli Animali e Bambini.

PRESENTED ON OCT 31, 2014
IN GENOVA @ VOL 10

This project have been presented to the 12th edition of Genoa Science Festival, as a playful lab for kids. Do animals have perception of the time? According to some scientists, only humans have a real memory, while the other animals have a perception of the time limited or episodic. A different perception of time can have different utilities according to escape strategy, communication or feeding. Time and its perception are not relative only on physics books! This happens in a lot of very small animals, for example the flies that perceive the world with a slow motion effect.

In other species the perception of time is connected to their movement in the space, as in case of dolphin and bats biosonar. Children are conducted in a fascinating “time travel” in their time perceptions, from the perception that themselves have, to try out what other animals fell of time, according to the different utility in the survival strategies.

Birth of a Science Festival

BY KATE DICKERSON
@ VOL 12 ON APR 11, 2014

Kate Dickerson moved to Bangor in 2002, after she and her husband lived the nomadic life of the academic world. While John followed the trail of physics jobs, Kate worked in all sorts of areas in the environmental field, and they traversed the northern part of the US. They were thrilled to settled down in Maine with their two kids, and have always felt like it was home. In her presentation, Kate takes us down the road that led her to create the Maine Science Festival.

IL FESTIVAL DELLA SCIENZA

BY MANUELA ARATA
@ VOL 10 ON OCT 31, 2014

Bergallo & Altri Animali

BY ALESSANDRO BERGALLO
@ VOL 10 ON OCT 31, 2014

A format to make science popular through entertainment. A variety. A monthly meeting which has taken place at La Claque (teatro della Tosse) in Genoa throughout the year 2014 and which has been dedicated to the understanding of the world of animals, with special guests and music. A comic show with a specific subject, that tells which are the dynamics of a group and which are the individual behaviours that make us similar -and feel different at the same time- to all the other living forms of this piece of earth. Insects, fishes, monkeys, reptiles, dinosaurs and fantasy animals like the "elephunk" (an elephant which loves the funky music): all the beasts are recalled to explain the complex dynamics that rule our relationships. On stage: musicians, biologists, scientists of the Robotic School in Genoa  with drones and robots, dancers, actors, comedians, dragqueen and whatever contributes to tell the story of each episode through the show.

Photography of  Donato Aquaro.

Il Tempo Di una Storia

BY SERGIO BADINO
@ VOL 10 ON OCT 31, 2014

Kids into Discovering Science

BY BARBARA FERNANDEZ GOING
@ VOL 14 ON AUG 12, 2015

Barbara Fernandez Going is a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her work examines the response of plant communities to spatial and temporal variation in the environment with the overarching goal of trying to predict which plant communities are most vulnerable to global change. She has a passion for science education and is co-founder of Kids into Discovering Science, a K-12 science education program based in Northern California.

Kids into Discovering Science (KiDS) is a growing K-12 science education program with roots in Northern California. The program illustrates the process of discovery and science through fun, hands-on classroom and field activities. Over ten weeks students act as Principal Investigators of a plant growth experiment which serves to illustrate the entire scientific process, from observing nature to collecting data and communicating results. The program year culminates in an all day trip to a local Natural Reserve which reinforces their newly gained scientific literacy, highlights the beauty of biodiversity, and provides a sense of place.

Il tempo del cibo

BY CHIARA PATITUCCI
@ VOL 3 ON SEP 06, 2016

Designing a Laboratory: Art, Architecture, and the Founding of Fermilab

BY KATIE YURKEWICZ
@ VOL 5 ON NOV 10, 2016

"The sculpture that straddles the lab's entrance appears symmetrical when viewed from below but asymmetrical from all over views, reflecting the view of broken symmetry that is crucial in modern physics."

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory looks like no other science lab on Earth—thanks to the vision of founding director Robert Wilson and artist Angela Gonzales. Under their aesthetic direction, architecture, sculpture, color, and design combined to produce a lab that was revolutionary for its time. In Designing a Laboratory: Art, Architecture, and the Founding of Fermilab from PechaKucha Night Batavia Vol. 5Katie Yurkewicz shows off another side of the legendary physics lab.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2017.
