From Model to Installation

Michael Szivos is the founder of SOFTlab, a New York City based design studio that combines research, technology, and ideas to craft work that spans multiple mediums and scales. In 2012 SOFTlab was awarded the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects & Designers, and in 2010 the studio was selected, along with seven other young studios, for the New Practices New York award by the AIA Chapter of New York. He also teaches at Pratt Institute and Columbia University.

Sophie Pennetier realllly likes glass. Hot bent glass, cold bent glass, she loves it all! Listen to her PechaKucha presentation to learn about all types of glass production.

Sophie is a structural engineer at Arup in New York. She is involved in the design of non-conventional architectural projects and in research related to freeform geometry facades (Liquid Wall project, IAPP ARC project). Sophie is a member of ASCE and ASTM committees, associated to the development of structural glass standards in the US, and co-authored industry publications on cold bent glass.

Wood in Multi-Family Residences

Matt is an acoustic and audiovisual consultant in Arup’s New York office and is involved in a wide variety of projects, from performing arts facilities to corporate fit-out.  Matt studied mechanical engineering at Northwestern University and has a background in live sound and broadcast.

In "Cricket Shelter: A Modular Insect Farm" from PechaKucha Night New York Vol. 18, architect Maria Aiolova discusses her obsession with cricket farming. Her firm, Terreform ONE, built a sustainable insect shelter on site to conduct extensive research on crickets - studying their growth, social development, and reproductive habits...before harvesting the adults and turning them into tasty treats!

Maria is an architect, educator, designer, and community builder in New York City. She is an innovator in ecological design, smart cities, sustainable urban infrastructure, water, transportation, and waste. Maria is a leader in interdisciplinary education focused on future cities.
