@ VOL 6 ON DEC 08, 2016

Petra Holler brought brutal honesty, beauty and humour in her poignant Pecha Kucha presentation surrounding her journey from art school drop out in Montreal to art activist in Penticton. Her raw and innovative performance used face paint, and images of her art and poetry to explain her manifesto and our shared struggle surrounding community building, health and creativity in modern society.

Promoting the Whole Food Plant Based Lifestyle for Optimal Health!

@ VOL 6 ON DEC 08, 2016

Dr. Wendy Ross began her Pecha Kucha by offering a candid confession to our audience: “Hello, My name is Dr. Wendy Ross, and I…am a vegan.” Dr. Ross deftly weaves on the benefits of a whole foods and plants based diet, bridging the gap between medical, accessible and entertaining.  and her philosophy behind opening her whole health clinic. Her evidence-backed proposal of the health benefits of a vegan diet are introduced in ways that will afford the community more options and control over their own health.

Cloaked in a wizards cape and brandishing a magical cucumber, local photographer Chelsea Terry whisks us away on a magical journey through Not Penticton and Fantasy Apex to one of 17 optional endings…determined by a roll of a D20 die. Using her artistic photography skills, a lot of humour and whimsy Chelsea peels back a layer of town to expose the depth of imagination one level underneath our city and surroundings.

The World Great Again: Trumping Prejudice

@ VOL 6 ON DEC 08, 2016

When local community builder, park ranger and comedian Isaac Gilbert initially sent in 20 slides of Donald Trump, no one knew quite what to expect. Isaac offered these controversial images to deftly support his thesis, ominously and explicitly tying the recent US election of Donald Trump to the zeitgeist currently driving politics and the societal quest for change. His presentation offers a creative and elegant connection between business tycoon and capitalist President Donald Trump, and his own response of community building through a tool library and co-op model.

Back to Baldy!

@ VOL 6 ON DEC 08, 2016

Baldy Mountain Resort, located just over an hour south of Penticton has been closed for years. A beautiful location, historically gorgeous snow and a vibrant mountain community once supported a tiny locally run resort. Joey O’Brien leverages his presentation to chart the difficult and adventurous journey from forgotten to revived, and how Baldy is proactively laying the foundation for a thriving community for years to come, including why they’ve offered $19 annual passes.

The Making of a Regenerative Capitalist

@ VOL 6 ON DEC 08, 2016

Daniel Vivarelli uses his business, Starloop, to offer a counterpoint to capitalism. He asks us to up our anti in terms of accountability, to lever interfacing with the system not just for ourselves, but for the common good, both as a consumer and as a business. He offers an empowering insight on not only how to make sustainability sustainable, but ultimately profitable, regenerative capitalism - a step beyond sustainable commerce.

Community Radio: Making it as an Individual and as a Whole

@ VOL 6 ON DEC 08, 2016

In the world of Netflix, iTunes and Facebook, how does community radio compete? Why should community radio compete? Local community radio coordinator Ophira Horwitz broadcasts her journey from biology student to Peach City, illustrating the bedrock community radio provides in isolated communities as an accessible, reliable communication platform to share and build art, vitality and culture, and the potential to build those things here in Penticton. Yes, there are pirates.

Overcoming Adversity & the Dark Days of Winter

@ VOL 6 ON DEC 08, 2016

Wendy Goudie knows winter. Growing up in the north where people practice yoga in snowsuits, Wendy traced her journey through seven of her hardest winters, laying the foundation for her business, built on hard work, passion, a bag of carrots and a jar of pickles. Wendy heartfully speaks of her growing business and community in Penticton, helped along by her family, her community and the sometimes surprising generosity of strangers, Wendy pays it forward by building Penticton into the bellydancing hub of Western Canada.
