A Hundred Words about a Trillion

BY EMILY INGLIS
@ VOL 33 ON APR 22, 2016

Emily Inglis - gardener and artist

If you are not an astrophysicist or a global economist a trillion is an abstract number, too big to grasp. How big is it? What does it buy? In my talk I will be comparing and contrasting what a trillion is worth. Looking at monetary value globally. How serious is national debt? How much would it cost to buy Wales? If you had enough money could you buy a unicorn? Or a house in Mayfair? These questions will be probed.

Here is the Place - Now is the Time

BY HERE+NOW C.I.C.
@ VOL 33 ON APR 22, 2016

HERE+NOW is a landscape architecture studio specialised in co-design. We deliberately combine engagement and design processes to integrate stakeholders and help realise more meaningful places. We have developed a range of innovative tools and techniques to help put people at the heart of design in the built environment. We constantly iterate and evolve these tools, testing their application in different contexts and sharing our findings.  We use film, photography, events and publications to visually capture, communicate and share this holistic design process and its outcomes with communities and decision makers alike. Feeding back to those who have input into a project and feeding forward our learnings to share with the wider industry. User-centred design, but for landscape architecture.

Species of Space

BY ROBERT POWELL
@ VOL 33 ON APR 22, 2016

Robert Powell has long been interested in encyclopaedic and organisational forms. His practice explores representations of reality that are universal, yet constantly subverted as they are enmeshed in a web of cultural and personal memory, of national histories and myths, always with the covering cherub of art history looming above. This interest was also exemplified his recent solo exhibition in Quebec City entitled ‘A Universal History of Iniquity’, which the artist has described as ‘a universal history viewed through the prism of Borges’ Aleph relocated to a Stockbridge basement.’
