Vilnius of Tomorrow

BY SERGEJ GRIGORJEV
@ VOL 130 ON NOV 25, 2015

"We invited electronica producers and singers from Japan to come to Lithuania to have a concert at a traditional Catholic church. Not to be mistaken, this was an LSD dream coming true."

In Vilnius of Tomorrow from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 130, cultural planner, graphic designer, and altogether eccentric Lithuanian, Sergej Grigorjev spotlights some of the hidden creativity that can be found in one of eastern Europe's most beautiful and forward-thinking capitals, Vilnius. He shares how the community is taking old traditions and re-imagining them in new ways to cultivate fresh perspectives and world-wide attention. And as part of Vilnius' creative resurgence, he has started a series of events - MADE IN JAPAN - with a focus on creative collaboration between Japan and the Baltic States.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Friday, December 11th, 2015.

Working with the Grain

BY SHU KUGE
@ VOL 130 ON NOV 25, 2015

Woodblock printing has its limitations, but it is precisely these limitations that artist Shu Kuge loves about the medium.

He speaks on the joys of working with a natural material -- one that hasn't ventured too far from its original form -- and how working in this medium is very directly connected with the concept of time.

Studio in a Can

BY SYLVAN PAYNE
@ VOL 130 ON NOV 25, 2015

"The iPad is like a studio in a can. It has unlimited supplies, unlimited variety of free or cheep tools, and there's no clean up."

In Studio in a Can from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 130, self-described "lapsed artist" Sylvan Payne shares rediscovering his inner-artist through making "doodles" on his iPad. The "painterly quality is all there" he nonchalantly states while 20 unsuspecting pieces that were created on his 9" iPad become vibrantly projected 10 feat tall murals at Tokyo's SuperDeluxe to much to the audience's delight.
