Sofubi: Soft Vinyl

BY DON KRATZER
@ PECHAKUCHA NIGHT SPECIAL @ AUTODESK POP-UP ON NOV 08, 2015

"When I say factory, it's often a 60 or 70-year old guy who has a shed out by the side of his house. He's pouring the the plastisol, and running it through the process, pulling out the pieces by hand, one by one."

In Sofubi: Soft Vinyl from PechaKucha Night Special @ Autodesk Pop-Up in TokyoDon Kratzer discusses soft vinyl as a medium, and particularly soft vinyl toys made in Japan. Versatile and vibrant, it has been used for generations as a medium for making toys and figurines that is proven to last. With advancements in digital technology, new opportunities are presented to those who design sofubi figures and collectibles.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Friday, January 23rd, 2016.

Startups in Space, Again

BY LUCAS BREMOND
@ PECHAKUCHA NIGHT SPECIAL @ AUTODESK POP-UP ON NOV 08, 2015

Spacecraft developer at Axelspace in Tokyo, Lucas Bremond catches us up on the accomplishments of the space programs of past and present, reminding us that many of historical cosmic triumphs were achieved with less computing power then that of our smartphones. He then turns our imaginations to the future, proposing a new age of space exploration where the playing field has been levelled, the barrier of entry lowered, an exciting new era of new inexpensive tech in space, which we can all potentially participate, and for the benefit of all.

Transformative Motorcycle Design

BY MATTHEW ROBERTS
@ PECHAKUCHA NIGHT SPECIAL @ AUTODESK POP-UP ON NOV 08, 2015

"The easiest way to describe what we do is like a two wheeled equivalent of the Eames LCW. We're looking for something that's timeless and embodies the essence of motorcycles."

Matthew Roberts of Speedtractor Industries, a custom motorcycle and design studio in Tokyo known from its elegant and personal custom creations, believes motorcycle design has finally come of age, to a place and time where people can appreciate the truest essence of motorcycling. Matthew discusses how a movement of bespoke design houses like his, offer riders and non-riders alike a glimpse of how a a new wave of contemporary design sense won't necessarily have to be rooted in a bygone time, nor will it likely loose it's mod look decades from now. An ultimately cool PechaKucha.

Digitus / Auris / Machina

BY SHIHO FUKUHARA
@ PECHAKUCHA NIGHT SPECIAL @ AUTODESK POP-UP ON NOV 08, 2015

Shiho Fukuhara discusses the advancement of computer technology. With personal electronics shrinking in size, invisible technology is within our reach. However, whether implanted or simply disguesed, technology will continue to shrink out of sight as advancements grow. Eventually, the line between organic and technological may be blurred.
