A Clean, Well-Lit Space - Comma Books Store

Having founded his own publishing house, Comma (which in turn created Yao Yao magazine), Mr. Chen began by sharing stories about his hometown Taoyuan. Now in its fifth year, his publishing house's mission as is to speak to the world via its publications, and to tread the no-man's land between dreams and the tough reality of operating a bookstore. Mr. Chen hopes the business will become known as Taoyuan's version of Hemingway's, 'a clean, well-lit space' and ultimately become a hit with the locals.

The Story of Ryokoushanomori Hotel

Ms. Chang shares her story of the four years since she returned to Taichung to open her hotel. It started with a simple goal: to return to her hometown and find a balance between work and life. With a staff of 1.5 people, the space in her hotel is a unique collection of design and creative art display. The hotel often holds salon nights and pottery workshops and she hopes the travelers who visit the Ryokoushanomori Hotel can get a more personal understanding of Taichung.

The Story of googoods store

From early beginnings as a household goods maker, she took her inspiration from her environment. Not only does she share the profound lessons of the path she trod, she also shares her plans to display designer products in the style of an exhibition, and her concepts for mobile furniture.

Good Fruit, Good Homemade Jam's Story

Ms. Ke talks about her experience of starting a homemade jam kitchen in the remote outskirts of Zhanghua's Shengang Village. Her journey of fruit discovery across Taiwan is like a road-trip movie in itself. She recounts her discovery of unique fruits from places like Taidong and Nantou, and she is outspoken about how a fruit farmer's livelihood is affected when government planning is insufficient or when nature is at its worst.

The Future of Tainan One House

Ms. Hsieh recounts using an 80-year-old traditional house from the Japanese occupation era as the base for 'Tainan One House'. Together with 6 friends, all with different skill sets, they held various activities by carefully managing local resources. The Concept Book Store - Ta Kao Books Store

PR manager of Ta Kao Books, designer of Godkidlla, first considered the different mindsets of people from different cities across Taiwan, before founding the Ta Kao bookstore with a friend (he originally hoped that the business would resonate amongst Kaoshiong's readers). By combining a bookstore with a café and event space, his diversified operation has come to delight a plethora of different customers. He now looks forward to operating in the unique style of Japan's concept bookstores, offering a more refined selection of books.

The Space Guerillas - Amass Design Group

Mr. Lu shares with us his work at Amass Design Group: everything from research to field study, from restoration to design. He calls his team the 'space guerillas' whose work is more akin to revolution. His team figures out new ways to use old spaces from the point-line-plane aspect, or attempt to restore existing architecture. They find derelict spaces and turn them into facilities like parks, bringing life back to the community.

30g.tw - The Fair Fruit and Vegetable Shopping Platform

Returning to Hualien to operate the 30g.tw fruit and vegetable shopping platform, Mr. Peng rediscovered his hometown through the variety of its produce. He hopes the creation of this platform will help the farmers by allowing their produce to achieve better pricing in a fairer market. He collaborates with designers who have made it easier for fresh produce to enter the market.

The Story of Iron Man Bike Store

Originally a pottery craftsman, Mr. Chen and his wife both love to ride bikes, and decided to start a bike shop decorated with the murals of young artists. After opening the business, he participated in numerous cycling events, and discovered foreign riders' praise for Taiwan's abundance of landscapes and routes, naming Taiwan a 'biker's heaven'. He also shares his stories of how his understanding of bikes has changed, and how he built his brand.
