On Friday June 5th at 6:00 pm, Arts on Main will be celebrating June’s First Friday event whose theme is sand - not in terms of beaches and sun-friendly men and women, but about the art of glass making by the Peninsula Glass Guild of Hampton Roads. These artisans have incorporated many of the traditional techniques developed over time and brought them to the 21st century, creating a whole new set of tools for the artist to explore and opening new horizons for creative expression. This is the "sand" bringing the diverse display of glass art to the gallery.
Music will be by Jerry Sowers, an acoustic singer-songwriter from Newport News, VA. Singing and playing music from the age of 14, he continues to sing traditional as well as original folk music. Audiences enjoy not only his music, but his ability to keep them both engaged and entertained with songs ranging from humorous to serious. Jerry teaches music in the Hampton City Schools system, where he has worked with children of all ages to inspire music and creativity in our youth. Recently, the Tidewater Friends of Acoustic Music, Virginia Beach invited Jerry to be on their Board of Directors.
There will be a special treat in addition to the amazing glass and music - a presentation of “PechaKucha” - a slide presentation format of 20 slides, 20 seconds - each slide on a theme of the author's choosing. This is a very dynamic way to exchange ideas and spark discussion. Previous sessions have been great fun.
Of course, this event is free to the public and there will be a cash bar and Shari's panninis to complete the evening. Gloucester Arts on Main would like to invite the Middlesex, Middle Peninsula and Gloucester Counties to come and be part of this unique event.
