Keeping Up with the Wind

After happening upon a website that displayed the United States' wind patterns visually one day, Cameron Beccario set out to do something even grander. Months of research and tinkering later, and after finding numerous sources of up-to-date weather data, he had created Earth: an animated map of global wind and weather.

Spirited Figures

Graphic designer and character designer Cesc Grané speaks about his amazing creations inspired by Japanese aesthetics and myth. Cesc began by taking cues from yokai (old Japanese monsters and spirits) and putting his own unique spin on their appearance and how they are connected. He tells us how the ethos of Japan has inspired him daily, and recounts stories of his fantastical daydreams involving monsters, heroes, and mischievous creatures of all sorts.

Where Games are Going (Or Not)

Artist, game designer, and UCLA Design|Media Arts professor Eddo Stern discusses a number of the projects he has worked on both personally, and in collaboration with his students. Here he shows off three projects in varying stages of development: a sensory deprivation game that uses haptic and audio feedback, a role-playing game that involves an audience of players using motion technology, and a hand-drawn game that incorporates elements of theater.

Putting the Fun into Funky Spaces

HUNK Design duo Bart Cardinaal and Nadine Roos come from Rotterdam, Netherlands and here they show off some of their radical interior and exterior design work. From funky interior redesigns and remodels, to outdoor patterned park spaces using artificial grass, HUNK is changing the way people use and interact with space.

“We gave out over 1000 albums and 10,000 portraits. We’ve involved 300 volunteers and 1000+ supporters. ”

In Photohoku 2.0, from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 116, photographers Brian Scott Peterson and Yuko Yoshikawa go into depth on their family photo album re-buidling project, Photohoku. This effort was founded in response to the giant earthquake that shook Japan in 2011 and aims to make new photos of families affected by disaster. It has grown into a global photo-giving, fundraising movement and has spread to the US, the Philippines, Australia, Korea, and many more.

デザイン会社TAKT PROJECT吉泉聡さんは、既製品に3Dプリンターで制作したオリジナル部品を組み合わせることで、異なる使い方を追求する、新しいDIYを提案しました。音楽の「サンプリング」技法のように、既製品を引用に3Dプリンターで作ったパーツを組み合わせ、オリジナル製品をつくりだしています。「使う人」と「つくる人」の両極ではなく、その二つの間をつなぐ0と1の間を紹介します。

Wonderful Worlds of 'What If...?'

Architect Saya Takahashi speaks about her love for the internationally famous Japanese manga and anime cyborg-cat Doraemon. She discusses the character's many magical and futuristic tools, such as the "What If Box" which creates alternate dimensions according to the user's curiosity. Saya tells us that Doraemon inspired her architectural career as well, encouraging her to question the way the world is, and change it for the better.
