60 Years in 6 Minutes

BY DOUG COATES
@ VOL 27 ON SEP 14, 2016

You'd think condensing 60 years of experience in to 6 minutes would be impossible but Doug Coates has definitely managed to succeed in this feat.  However he is now finding a new thing to experience, INSTAGRAM, and getting all the likes.  Who isn't addicted to INSTAGRAM though!?  His drawings a day for a year seemed like an easy task and an easy like grab but he found out quickly that this was not the case.

That's Also Me

BY HELY SCHUMANN
@ VOL 27 ON SEP 14, 2016

A tale of how one person dropped out of design school.

THE END

JUST KIDDING!!!

Hely Schumann describes the trials of fielding her passion but at first she had to wade through a multitude of other little jobs, including preventing dogs from peeing on trees, manuevering a 16' truck through downtown, and working at Grant Park mall.  Needing a change she took some time off and now found that she was ready to take the leap to start her schooling experience all over again.  Goes to prove that some times you just need to wander before you find your path.

Here's to all the Graphic Designing Rockstars.

Travelling Sign Painters

BY JOSEPH & BRIDGET THE TRAVELLING SIGN PAINTERS
@ VOL 27 ON SEP 14, 2016

Public speaking might not be their strong point but these Travelling Sign Painters have gathered a small bead of success in their little business.  Mixing up their DMD education and love of graphic design and illustration they gathered an idea and it blossomed.  From a little cart being pulled from behind a 10-speed bike and buzzing around the city just making art and collaborting.  These two have definitely got a long way to go yet.

Life Can Get Hairy

BY KELLY O'LEARY
@ VOL 27 ON SEP 14, 2016

Some times life can get a little hairy. Kelly O'Leary knows this the best and took experience from Clueless, giving a variety of rad make-overs in an alternative matter.  When highschool didn't work out, hair school was the place to be with all the blonde highlights the world could tolerate.

From embarassing hair accidents to the joy of her first child.  O'Leary has seen it all and took it with grain of salt and learned from all of it.  "It stays with you forever, and you learn from it".  Now addicted to working and pinterest (who isn't), she found her calling in vintage hair and pinup beauties.

Floodway Print

BY CORY BEAL
@ VOL 27 ON SEP 14, 2016

Business never has an end point, it is a constant goal to grow and create something better.  Cory Beal combined his love of BMX riding with everything artistic that he could think of.  It was the jumping off point (pun intended) for his life goals and the beginning of his story.  This wide-eyed hooligan was convinced that he never wanted to get stuck in a career he wouldn't enjoy and wanted to get out and see the world.  If he had to work, he wanted it to be enjoyable and a constant learning experience.  He finally made the shoe fit, and at the end of his long string of "crap" jobs he finally found his calling.

Who's There?

BY MARILYN LYSACK SIMON

After 7 consecutive hours of lecturing as an English Professor who wouldn't want to get up in front of a room full of strangers and talk about your life and passions?

Inclusivity

BY NEIL BAILEY
@ VOL 27 ON SEP 14, 2016

A label on the outside of a bathroom door can be the beginning of a world-changing narrative.  Inclusivity is a hot topic in the progressive world of 2016 yet we should have evolved much further than what we consider "progressive" by now.

All About Timing

BY NEIL MIDDLETON
@ VOL 27 ON SEP 14, 2016

There is something amazing about an entire hall filling with the uproar of applause and the silent resonance of music from 100 years ago following.

Box Heads

BY ZORYA ARROW
@ VOL 27 ON SEP 14, 2016

Zorya Arrow was told her whole life that she looks just like her Father.  Wanting to explore this connection she took her passion for art and performance and created a dance piece alongside a wall of boxes with portraits of both her Father and her draw on their surfaces.  With a great deal of emotional investment and hours of observing their connection became an intensive study of family and meaning.
