The World's Best City When It Rains

This is the idea that Jesper Larsson brought to the table in The World's Best City When It Rains from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 100

This was "Presentation of the Day" on February 19th, 2017.

Marking the City

BY NICK BRUSCIA
@ VOL 92 ON MAY 30, 2012

An impromptu and ad-libbed Tokyo fiction deriving meaning from a mundane observation -- street annotations and mysterious tags, both written and physically placed. It is imagined that these tags embed another layer of information into the city by casting invisible perimeters within which encoded experiences are left behind and felt by others through ubiquitous mobile / augmented-reality devices. Tokyo is remapped through visual and physical sensations that overlap, fade away, and are activated by the weather or proximity, and offer an ephemerality akin to Tokyo's ever changing urban fabric. All the World's a Square

BY BERND KESTLER
@ VOL 102 ON APR 24, 2013

The Granny Square project is an initiative asking crocheters from around the world to crochet and send one or more "Granny Square" motifs to Japan to make the world’s largest ‘Granny Square Blanket’. Bernd needs at least 7,150 squares of 20 x 20 cm. Once completed, the blanket will be submitted to Guinness World Records. But the best is that, after, the blanket will be divided back into regular size afghans and donated to temporary housing facilities in Tohoku, Japan, to support victims of the March 2011 earthquake.

You'll find more info at the "Knit for Japan" website.

The World's Best City When It's Smoggy

BY JESPER LARSSON
@ VOL 21 ON APR 11, 2013

Jesper Larsson applies his previous ideas for turning Gothenburg into the best city on Earth when it rains to Shanghai, asking how to turn the city’s smog problem into a benefit. He looks at using lasers and UV lights to put a unique spin on everything from tai chi to punk rock, and suggests that using plants and urban gardening could turn parts of the city into clean air havens.

Creativity Loves Constraints: Improvisation, Always our Very Best Alternative

BY GERT POPPE
IN MAASTRICHT

In business as in life, we try to control the future by making (business) strategies and (marketing) plans. But most of the time, things turn our differently, don’t go as planned. And then we fall back on improvisation.

Improvisation always is our very best alternative. We improvise when something unexpected happens; we improvise because we have forgotten to take certain influences into account; we improvise when people behave differently than we expected.

The best leaders, the best managers, the best professionals are not those that excel in analysis and making plans and strategies, but the ones that fully master and exploit their improvisation skills.

And, by the way, improvisation is also a very useful approach to living one’s life.

Celebrating Illustrators and Tokyo

BY THE TOKYOITER
@ VOL 138 ON JUL 27, 2016

"We were documenting Tokyo a lot, but even though we might draw Tokyo tower three times, because of our different background and where we come from, there will be three different outcomes which we thought was really interesting."

In Celebrating Illustrators and Tokyo from PechaKucha Night Tokyo Vol. 138, David Robert and Andrew Joyce share on The Tokyoiter project. The Tokyoiter is willing to present the talent of artists and the wonderful and inspiring city of Tokyo to a larger audience. Every cover of this imaginary magazine and tribute to The New Yorker and The Parisianner is a celebration of creativity and one of the best city on earth.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Friday, September 2nd, 2016.
