PechaKucha Silver Spring: Volume X is a special milestone for us. We’ve talked about several complex topics, and this time, we’re going to wind down the year by talking about women. 2017 was a big year for women in America, after all. And not only women, but the full spectrum of how women’s issues were represented in our politics, media, sports, education systems and societal institutions. Ani DiFranco alluded to this spectrum in her song, “32 Flavors”: “I am a poster girl with no poster...I am thirty-two flavors and then some...I'm beyond your peripheral vision...so you might want to turn your head.”
2017 started with the Women's March. Pussy hats. Melissa McCarthy played Sean Spicer. Sen. Elizabeth Warren was silenced, which gave rise to the now common quote ‘nevertheless, she persisted’. The number of missing girls in this area finally attracted attention. MTV removed gendered categories from the VMA’s and their MTV Movie & TV Awards, where Emma Watson won best Actor. Rep. Maxine Waters let us all know she was “reclaiming my time”. Wonder Woman. The first transgender man had a baby. Octavia Spencer played God (in the movie The Shack). A Google employee was fired for perpetuating gender stereotypes. Heather Heyer died in Charlottesville. And the list goes on of women and women-related issues in the news. While all this has been going on, you’ve been having your own experience. Let’s talk about it.
