Reexamining an Abandoned Amusement Park, Teaching Kids How to Deal with Disabilities, and Guerilla Projecting in Providence

PKN Miami Vol. 15 Presentations A presentation (from PKN Miami Vol. 15) by Anthony Spinello and Augustina Woodgate about a project in Berlin called Kulturpark, taking place in an abandoned amusement park. Here's more on the project from the official website:

In the Treptower Park forest in East Berlin, along the Spreeriver, there is an abandoned amusement park. The park, originally called Kulturpark Planterwald, was built in 1969 by the GDR and was a rare site for Soviet amusement and attraction. After the fall of the wall, the park became the family-owned Spreepark and suffered challenges of access, attendance, and economy. In 2001, the park closed from capital collapse. Ever since, visitors have regularly traversed the fence to explore this jungle of broken thrill machines. In June 2012, Kulturpark will explore the poetics and potential of these recent ruins, building upon the unique energy of Berlin’s urban, social, cultural, and political landscapes.

Marina Potanina is the president of a charity foundation called To Kids About Kids. In her presentation (in Russian, from PKN Moscow Vol. 12) she talks about the project, and the creation of an animated series about school life for a group of kids, with one of the main characters being a girl in a wheelchair. In Russia, there are no books, TV, or other examples of adequate communication with people with disabilities. Marina believes that if we start by talking to kids about these issues, that our society will be changed. PKN Beirut Vol. 11 Posters We end the week with a Tumblr blog update that includes quite a few older posters: PKN Beirut Vol. 11 (pictured above), PKN Sevilla Vol. 9 and 11, PKN Jakarta Vol. 10, PKN New Orleans Vol. 4, PKN Chicago Vol. 18, PKN Louisville Vol. 1, PKN Dublin Vol. 1, PKN Christchurch Vol. 3, PKN The Hague Vol. 5, PKN Victoria Vol. 3-6, PKN Huddersfield Vol. 1, and PKN Los Angeles Vol. 28. PKN Providence Vol. 41 Photos We spotted this photo (by Twitter user @parulia, who was attending her first PKN) taken at this past Wednesday's PKN Providence Vol. 41 -- we sure love the guerilla nature of the venue and projection wall.  Calendar There's just one event tonight (August 31), with Kumamoto hosting its Vol. 4. Then, you can look to Saturday for the following two events: PKN Hyderabad Vol. 10 and PKN Kathmandu Vol. 6.

PKN Memphis Vol. 2 Presentations History is important, we can surely all agree on that, but with his presentation (from PKN Memphis Vol. 2) Justin Thompson wants to make sure we all get the message. Entrepreneur and graphic designer Gustavo Garcia uses his presentation (in Portuguese, from PKN Sao Paulo Vol. 10) to teach us 10 important life lessons, regarding work, jobs, life, career, and more. PKN Champaign-Urbana Vol. 10 Posters The new posters on the Tumblr blog today are for PKN Moscow Vol. 19, PKN Columbus Vol. 22, and PKN Champaign-Urbana Vol. 10, which is the beautiful fully illustrated poster you see above.  PKN Tokyo Vol. 93 PKN Tokyo Vol. 93 Photos Today we'll point you to photos from last month's PKN Tokyo Vol. 93, taken as always by Michael Holmes -- we have galleries up on both Facebook and Flickr. Our Vol. 94 is coming up -- on Wednesday of next week (July 25) -- and since August is always a skip month for us here in Tokyo, it will be our last PKN of the summer. Calendar It's a quiet Wednesday with no PKNs happening tonight, but tomorrow (July 19) you can look forward to St. Albert's very first PKN, as well as a special edition PKN in Chicago (more details in this post).

PKN Williamsburg Vol. 1 Presentations Williamsburg is known for its historic districts, and especially the popular Duke of Gloucester Street. In this presentation by PKN Williamsburg organizer Dale Weiss (from the city's Vol. 1), we are shown a whole other part of the city that is usually hidden behind gates. Maxim Zirin is a TV producer. Together with a reporter and a cameraman he went to Chukotka to shoot a piece about how local people hunt whales for a weekly programme on Russian's NTV. Chukotka is the northeastern extremity of Asia, in the northern part of the Russian Far East. Please note that some of the images included in the presentation (in Russian, from PKN Moscow Vol. 10) are graphic. PKN Nashville Vol. 7 Posters We have a few new posters on the Tumblr blog today, starting with the 7-11 inspired example that you see above, for tonight's PKN Nashville Vol. 7 -- held on 7/11, get it? Also up today are posters/flyers for PKN Kansas City Vol. 11, PKN Cape Town Vol. 17, PKN Warsaw Vol. 6, and PKN Banja Luka Vol. 1. PKN Marseille-Provence Vol. 19 Photos We have two photo galleries to share today, the first for this past Saturday's PKN Marseille-Provence Vol. 19, which also marked the series 5th anniversary -- which explains why the crowd is holding a celebratory candle in the photo above. We had a tiny peek at Mallorca's Vol. 1 last week, but today we have a more complete gallery to share.

PKN Tokyo Vol. 92 Presentations A Bangor native with a passion for weird and creative things, Chris Pierce has been a star "Dungeon Master" -- the person who directs a session of a role-playing game -- at the annual SnowCon Gaming Convention in Orono for the past 4 years. His enthusiasm and love of tabletop gaming is addictive -- and shines through in this presentation from PKN Bangor, ME Vol. 4 -- and he’s been known to convince many a "noob" to sit in on a game of Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow. In this presentation (in Japanese, from PKN Tokyo Vol. 92), architects Daisuke Sugawara and Masayuki Harada describe a reconstruction project they've been working on, to help rebuild in the Tohoku region. As you'll see, they've been trying to rebuild villages, to keep the community together. PKN St. Louis Vol. 9 Posters We have two new posters on the Tumblr blog today, one for next month's PKN St. Louis Vol. 9 (pictured above) and one for the upcoming PKN Moscow Vol. 19 (it's not listed on the official site yet, but it should be added soon).  http://www.flickr.com/photos/pechakuchanight/sets/72157629994486034/ Photos For the past couple of days we've been sharing coverage of specific events, and so today we catch up on quite a few photosets that we've been adding to our Flickr account. Pictured above, PKN Koszalin Vol. 8.

Craig Yamashita Presentations The cute -- kawaii -- culture that was perfected in Japan has now proliferated on a global scale. Why? This modernist graphic designer (aka Craig Yamashita) laments the reasons (from PKN Tokyo Vol. 92). Artyom Ukropov is an architect at Megabudka Bureau, and in this presentation (in Russian, from PKN Moscow Vol. 18) he shares his utopian plans -- all based on real data and statistics -- on how to solve all of the problems of modern Russia. His solution involves moving all of the population to the territory that surrounds the Moscow region. PKN Xalapa Vol. 10 Posters Today's new crop of posters on our Tumblr blog includes PKN Tallinn Vol. 4 (which happens tomorrow night), PKN Bangor Vol. 5 (also happening tomorrow night), PKN Plzen Vol. 1 (happening tonight), and PKN Xalapa Vol. 10 (happening tonight, and pictured above).  PKN Tokyo Vol. 92 PKN Tokyo Vol. 92 PKN Tokyo Vol. 92 Photos The photos we have to share today are all pictured above, and were taken last night at PKN Tokyo Vol. 92 by our resident photographer, Michael Holmes. These are traditional shots we always take and include (from top) the big group shot, the presenters group shot, and the "PechaKucha Mix" participants.  Calendar On the final day of May, you'll be able to attend the following events: PKN Plzen Vol. 1, PKN Seattle Vol. 36, PKN Ulladulla Vol. 3, and PKN Xalapa Vol. 10. Tomorrow (June 1), this is what your Friday night could include: PKN Bucharest Vol. 9, PKN Tallinn Vol. 4, PKN Sioux Falls Vol. 4, PKN Kumamoto Vol. 3, and PKN Bangor Vol. 5.

We're experimenting with this new post format again, trying to give you more bang for your buck in terms of offering a daily snapshot of what's happening in the world of PechaKucha, and trying to save you from the endless streams of feed notifications that seem to clutter our lives. Presentations As we recently covered on the blog, we had a special PechaKucha event this past Friday here in Tokyo, as part of the 10th edition of the Magazine Library exhibition. We invited 5 presenters to cover topics that touch on magazines and print culture, and we'll be sharing all of them online today and tomorrow. Today, you get to hear Audrey Fondecave talk about the upcoming issue of TOO MUCH ("the magazine of romantic geography"), Mike Abelson talk about his stationery brand Postalco, and a recent printing project he embarked on, and Luis Mendo tells us how Tokyo turned this editorial designer into an artist. PKN Manizales Vol. 1 Posters We've got another new batch of PKN posters and flyers up on our Tumblr blog, including a few examples of what was produced for PKN Manizales Vol. 1 (above, a flyer), as well as from PKN Muscat Vol. 1, PKN Beirut Vol. 13, PKN Buffalo Vol. 12, PKN Cagliari Vol. 2, and PKN Moscow Vol. 12. PKN Sao Paulo Vol. 10 PKN Sao Paulo Vol. 10 Event Photos We know you love seeing event photos -- to get a feel for how PKNs are being done around the world -- and we're going to be sharing even more, by posting links to even more galleries than in the past. Pictured above, a scene from March's PKN Sao Paulo Vol. 10, as well as a few happy attendees during the beer break.

Links A few PechaKucha-related links from around the webosphere.

  • An interview (in Russian) with our friends from PKN Moscow at Theoryandpractice
  • We don't usually like to give too much instructions on how to do a presentation -- we like to see how each person approaches the format -- but for those in need a few tips, this post might help
