20 Images on 20 Years in Japan, Street Art in Usti nad Labem, and Using the PechaKucha Format at School
Presentations Don Kratzer has lived in Japan for 20 years, and following the PK 20x20 format, he uses his presentation (from PKN Tokyo Vol. 95) to share what he's been up to all this time using one image for each year. In her presentation (in Czech, from PKN Usti nad Labem Vol. 2), Zofia Drut talks about her public and street art activities, that have been held in elevators, buses, markets, and any other public venue she's been able to use. Posters We have two new posters to share today on the Tumblr blog, starting with PKN Banja Luka Vol. 6, pictured above -- the event was held just over a week ago. The other addition is a second poster for the upcoming PKN Mendoza Vol. 6 -- see the lovely "moustache" edition we shared last month. Links We are often contacted by teachers and professors from around the world who are interested in using the PechaKucha format in their classes, and here's a great example of its use at the College of Charleston, and one that was inspired by the local PKN series.
Professor Jeanette Guinn says PechaKucha in an integral part of her course, Understanding Creativity. “The PechaKucha concept stretches students to be creative and expand their writing and public speaking skills,” she says. “You just can’t achieve that with a paper and a test.”
SEPTEMBER 06, 2012
Presenters In his presentation (from PKN Hyderabad Vol. 9), Neil Ghosh shares his love for astronomy, and takes us on a tour that covers different aspects of the science, tying it to his own personal learning of it. Julia Bondarchuk is the owner of the cookery club and shop Edoque, and in her presentation (in Russian, from PKN St. Petersburg Vol. 20) she talks about her cooking parties and workshops, where cooking turns to a game, using culinary construction sets. The master classes and workshops have the goal of inspiring people to cook and to save time when doing so. Posters Today's addition to the Tumblr blog is whiskerlicious, with the wonderful illustrated poster for the upcoming PKN Mendoza Vol. 6, pictured above. Photos The city of Chelmsford hasn't had its first PKN yet -- although we expect that will happen soon -- but here's what appears to be a bit of... guerrilla teasing? It was found on Instagram, with the tags #pechakucha, #chelmsford, and #20x20. Calendar Thursdays tend to be the night of choice for PKNs, and we have another busy one tonight (September 6): PKN Barnsley Vol. 5, PKN Dunedin Vol. 15, PKN Svendborg Vol. 2, PKN Singapore Vol. 5, PKN Santiago Vol. 3, and PKN Budapest Vol. 28. Getting Things Done Through ADD and Remaking the Brazilian National Anthem
Presentations Kerry Crawford has ADD, "real bad." She uses her presentation (from PKN Memphis Vol. 2) to not only explain what ADD really is and how it affects her, but also uses the disease to teach others how to get things done. We live in a world of remixes, and in his presentation (in Portuguese, from PKN Curitiba Vol. 1), Rafael Rosa offers up and sings his new version of the national anthem of Brazil. Posters Today's additions to the Tumblr blog are led by quite a few posters from PKN Hyderabad (Vol. 6-10, with a few examples below), as well as PKN Tijuana Vol. 1 (pictured above), PKN Cairns Vol. 5, and PKN Mendoza Vol. 6. Presentations We'll say this: there aren't many people who are bigger fans of Mariah Carey than Tom McBride. In his presentation (from PKN Blue Mountains Vol. 1), he shares the enthusiasm and infectious passion he has for his biggest idol. In this presentation (in Italian, from PKN Genoa Vol. 1) by Marco Cacciamani we learn about Duplex Ride, a cultural association founded in 2010 and interested in all forms of art, which mainly organizes events for electronic music and video projections. Duplex Ride is an idea in motion, it's an art collective, electronic research, experimenting in all its forms, including painting, photography, and writing. Posters There's no new addition to the Tumblr blog today, so instead we highlight one of the posters we recently added. Above, a dog takes care of washing down last month's PKN Mendoza Vol. 5. Photos We now have full galleries of photos from last week's PKN Tokyo Vol. 94 to share, which you'll find on both Facebook and Flickr. All photos were taken by our regular photographer, Michael Holmes, along with his assistant Nomi. In his presentation (in Greek, from PKN Athens Vol. 4), he gives a few good reasons on why Athens is a great place to live. Geoff Hodgson is a photographer, surfer, and musician, and in his presentation (from PKN Dunsborough Vol. 1), his goal is to make us appreciate the forceful nature of oceans. Posters We have two new posters on the Tumblr blog today, first for PKN Derby Vol. 6 (pictured above), which is set for July 25, and then for PKN Mendoza Vol. 5, which will be held a few days later, on July 29. Photos Today we'll point you to this Flickr photoset of photos from Toronto's recent PKN Vol. 16, which was held as part of last month's NXNE festival. Pictured above, the event's presenters. Presentations Megg Evans is a Melbourne-based designer who co-founded Brolly Studios with Martin Heide and Stuart Webber. When she gave this presentation (from PKN Melbourne Vol. 19), her son Melvin was just 10 weeks old, and she brought him along and gave this beautiful 20x20 lullaby to her baby and the very impressed crowd. Fede Calandria's work could be described as a combination of art, design, and illustration. As he explains in this presentation (in Spanish, from PKN Mendoza Vol. 3), he finds inspiration everywhere, and likes to incorporate what he sees in his daily life, interpreting it in his own way. Posters We end the week with an explosion of posters on our Tumblr blog, with the following events being represented: PKN Guimaraes Vol. 3, PKN Memphis Vol. 1 and 2, PKN St. Albert Vol. 1, PKN Mallorca Vol. 1, and then PKN Maribor Vol. 9, which is pictured above. We sure love that Maribor tagline: "Come and meet our amazing guests. Creativity is their middle name ;-)" Below, a look at both sides of the flyer that was produced for last night's PKN Norwich Vol. 4. Photos We like this spray painted crate we spotted here, located at the entrance of this past week's PKN Bilbao Vol. 12. Below, a look at the old school billboard entrance to the theatre where last night's PKN Winnipeg Vol. 10 was held. Calendar It's Friday (June 22), and so here's what you can expect in terms of events over the weekend, starting with tonight: PKN Zilina Vol. 19, PKN Sendai Vol. 2, PKN Miami Vol. 2, PKN Gisborne Vol. 9, and PKN Seattle Vol. 37. It's a quiet Saturday in PKN land, but Sunday will see PKN Pueblo Vol. 5.
JUNE 19, 2012
Presentations HP Kuhnert went on a hiking trip to the Himalayas in Nepal, and in this richly illustrated presentation (in German, from PKN PKN Aalen Vol. 4) he shares his travel experiences and his impressions from a country that is so very different. The photos will make you want to experience these beautiful landscapes first-hand. "Bechos" means "single and with children," but it's also a social meeting platform for single parents on the internet. In this presentation (from PKN Istanbul Vol. 14), Yersu Kalaba shows how it is being used to share ideas and problems that relate to being single with children, and how it is developing through its members. Posters We have a few new posters on the Tumblr blog today, starting with the poster you see pictured above designed by Michelle Hanevold, for the upcoming PKN Bemidji Vol. 13. Today's additions also include PKN Innsbruck Vol. 1 and PKN Mendoza Vol. 5. Photos You all know about the PechaKucha Night city loop, right? It's the slideshow of photos from different PKN cities that plays at all PKNs (before the start, during the break, and after it's all over), and it gets updated with new cities when we receive our first photo from one of their events. Pictured above is a peek at last week's PKN Ornskoldsvik Vol. 1, and that's the photo that we're including in the next update to the city loop. Calendar Today's (June 19) events are PKN Usti nad Labem Vol. 2 and PKN San Diego Vol. 15. Tomorrow, look for the following PKNs: PKN Risor Vol. 2, PKN Glasgow Vol. 8, and PKN Brighton Vol. 15.
MAY 21, 2012
Presentations We kick off a new week of presentations with one from Curitiba (Vol. 1) and one from Cork (Vol. 3). In "Underground Food" (in Portuguese), Guilherme Caldas takes us on a tour Curitiba's lesser known culinary highlights. If you've been feeling like you need to get a bit more excitement in your day, try following Niall Doherty and his "Random Acts of Courage." Posters We've got a few new posters on our Tumblr blog, including the ones for PKN Mendoza Vol. 4 (above), PKN London Vol. 6, and PKN Dnipropetrovsk Vol. 1, which debuts tomorrow. Videos Instead of sharing photos today, and since there seems to be an absolute boom in these, today we share a few teaser videos that have been produced for PKNs -- we love them so much that we often play some at our PKNs here in Tokyo. Below, teaser videos for PKN Curitiba Vol. 2, PKN Tel Aviv Vol. 13, and PKN Lisbon Vol. 14. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J5alkNK6zI httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMu22YtbFiU Links
