JOHANNESBURG Posts

“You might see this when you don't know when to shut up. He wants to cover your mouth with his hand to get you to shut up, but that’s socially not correct so he projects his intentions over his own face.”

In Body Language from PechaKucha Night Johannesburg’s 12th volume, speaker Gaetan Schmid presents on the not quite secret language of the human body.  We create impressions in others minds of how we sit, stand and walk, he provides the guidebook to them. A very comical and informative presentation from what he has learnt in Theatre.

“One of the best salespeople I know is a guy called brandon. He runs a foundation called life changes in cape town. Every day he is selling. He takes gangsters off the street and sells them clean living. Women who have been sex trafficked since age 10, he sells them celibacy.”

In Life is a Pitch… from PechaKucha Night Johannesburg’s 12th Volume, speaker Shelley Walters presented on how our lives are a selling process. By improve how we sell ourselves, how we persuade people, we can improve our lives and that of others.

The City Focus this week ventures to one of the youngest major cities of the wold, the South African "City of Gold", Johannesburg, more fondly known these days as just "Jozi". Survey for some gems in their collection of presentations, latest of which are from last month's 12th volume!

Well helloooo Joburg! My team and I are so excited and inspired to have taken over as the City Organisers for PechaKucha Nights Johannesburg! It's been a rollercoaster of a few months, but we have finally settled on a venue, funnily enough called "The Venue", in Melrose Arch. We've had a few events there over the years with much success.

Entrance is free, but bookings are essential, so please book here savemeaseat@pechakuchajoburg.co.za asap!

We have a few speakers already lined up, but applications are still open so please apply soonest so that we can put you up in front of your fellow Joburgers and knock their socks off with your creativity and Joburg passion! Apply here: letmespeak@pechakuchajoburg.co.za. Submissions close Dec 31st, so get cracking.

Looking forward to seeing you all there on Jan 27th - 54 days and counting, the last time I checked :-)

Have a magic weekend!

Zwai and Phillip

Our final presentation from PechaKucha Night in Johannesburg Vol. 5 is a bit of an irreverent one -- OK, maybe actually QUITE irreverent -- with Zwai and Phillip sharing with us "Rebuilding, the African Way." We hope it puts a smile on your face. You can see more presentation from Johannesburg in that city's section of the "Presentations" area.

Brett Will

Continuing with our a look at a few presentations from PechaKucha Night in Johannesburg Vol. 5, here then is Brett Will who shows us how we should go about "Rebuilding a nation by embracing children." Please take note that donations are still indeed being accepted for the "PechaKucha for Haiti" reconstruction efforts, and that you can donate directly to a presentation that moved you, or for a city -- on that city's respective PKN page -- that you want to represent.

Studio4332

We'll end our week of postings on the blog with a trio of presentations taken from PechaKucha Night in Johannesburg Vol. 5, held on February 20 as part of the "Global PechaKucha Night for Haiti." First up is Studio4332 with a special "Silent salute to Haiti."

When one person passes away, we honour them by staying silent for 1 minute, but what do you do when 230,000 die? A silent presentation.

Johannesburg will be joining in on the "Global PechaKucha Night for Haiti" on the 20th, with an event happening at Atlas Studios (Milpark, Studio 3, top gate), from 20:00. Here's also a look at a terrific teaser video put together by the organizers.

The organizers behind PechaKucha Night in Johannesburg love to release teaser videos before each event, and they've put together another one for the upcoming Vol. 4, with the theme of "What is beauty?" The event itself happens this Thursday (December 3) at Atlas Studios.

PKN Johannesburg Vol. 3

Last week's PechaKucha Night in Johannesburg Vol. 3 was a great success, garnering "compliments throughout the day on a superb event with excellent presentations." Organizer Mary Cassel-Faulks sends in a few photos from the event, and take note that the date for Vol. 4 has already been set: November 26.
