GUIMARÃES

BACK TO CITY

GUIMARÃES Posts

Here's an intriguing -- and almost creepy -- video teaser for Guimaraes's PechaKucha Night Vol. 8, which was held this past Saturday.

Guimarães Vol. 5 Recapped

On a spring evening in Portugal, PKN Guimarães held their fifth iteration of PechaKucha Night. Portuguese creative motion and video studio Damn Works put together a great video recap of the evening, which can be found here.

As is customary, check out the Guimarães Vol. 5 event page for photos from this soiree.

To see snaps from PechaKucha Nights near you and from all over the world, check out our Global Map.

Yet another Portuguese city will host their latest PechaKucha evening this weekend, namely Guimarães.

Coming this Saturday evening, April 20, PKN Guimarães Vol. 5 will feature discussions at the crossroads of economics and graffiti, post-modernism and football, perception and landscape, as well as many more intriguing combinations.

To see more great posters from PechaKucha Nights all over the world, check out our Tumblr blog.

One of Portugal's historical and cultural centers -- Guimarães -- held their swank Vol. 4 PechaKucha Night back in November 2012. If you've never been to a PechaKucha Night, or just want to see how things are done in Portugal, this video is a prime example.

The organizers of Guimarães have also put up photos from this evening on their event page, so take a moment and give it a look!

PKN Chattanooga Vol. 11 Presentations In his presentation (from PKN Chattanooga Vol. 11), Jim Farmer takes a look at all manner of unsanctioned racing, from the nostalgic to the crazy, to the plain old fun. As we discover in her presentation (from PKN Pittsfield Vol. 3), Diane Firtell goes out and takes photos of people she meets at the Guido's grocery store (and sometimes other places), a project that then saw her add computer "painting" to eliminate the visual noise in the background of the photos. PKN Guimaraes Vol. 4 Posters For today's additions to the Tumblr blog, we start with a look at the flyer and poster for the upcoming PKN Guimaraes Vol. 4. We've also added the poster for PKN Castellon de la Plana Vol. 2  PKN Guimaraes Vol. 4 PKN Hong Kong Vol. 2 PKN Hong Kong Vol. 2 Photos Adding to the photo gallery for last week's PKN Hong Kong Vol. 12 we've already shared, here are two more Facebook galleries to share, with photos by Cheehaur Tan and Vic Shing (Art Surveillance).  Calendar There are no events this evening, but tomorrow night sees PKN Providence Vol. 42. Thursday will bring the following five events: PKN Guatelmala City Vol. 2, PKN Lille Vol. 2, PKN Knoxville Vol. 5, PKN Chillicothe Vol. 1, and PKN Vladimir Vol. 9.

PKN Sendai Vol. 2 Presentations Don DeAngelis is from the U.S. Geological Survey, and in this presentation (from PKN Miami Vol. 15) he covers the organization's project that targets wading birds in the Everglades. In this presentation from Sendai (in Japanese, recorded at the city's Vol. 2) -- one of the hardest hit areas of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake -- Shuichi Suzuki talks about the "Sabbath Project," a collection of accessories to commemorate the tragedy. PKN Guatemala Posters The only new addition to the Tumblr blog today is the image you see above, which is the front side for a PKN Guatemala City poster, for the upcoming Vol. 2 (which hasn't been dated yet).  PKN Tokyo Vol. 94 PKN Tokyo Vol. 94 PKN Tokyo Vol. 94 PKN Tokyo Vol. 94 Photos Last night was our PKN Tokyo Vol. 94, and we already have a few photos to share. From the top, the night's regular presenters, the "PechaKucha Mix" presenters, Yukinari Hisayama and his group of students who presented together, and then finally a PK family shot featuring from left PKN Guimaraes co-organizer Joao Rosmaninho, PechaKucha founders Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein, yours truly, PK coordinator Yuki Takai, and PKN Guimaraes co-organizer Jose Martins. Calendar Here's what you can expect tonight (July 26): PKN Milwaukee Vol. 11, PKN Portland, Maine Vol. 20, PKN Detroit Vol. 12, and PKN Los Angeles Vol. 31. Tomorrow, look for the following four events: PKN Champaign-Urbana Vol. 10, PKN Pune Vol. 5, PKN Ekaterinburg Vol. 4, and PKN Tbilisi Vol. 2.

PKN Kyiv Vol. 7 Presentations Tatiana Guryeva's presentation (in Ukrainian, from PKN Kyiv Vol. 7) is based on recollections of her childhood. You'll see the Kyiv of the 70s and 80s, or at least how it has remained in her memory, as well as Pechersk, the area where she grew up, and Podol, the area where she currently lives.

Art’s task is to Save the Soul of Mankind, and that anything less is a dithering while Rome burns. Because if the Artist, who are self-selected to be able to journey into the other... if the Artist cannot find the way, then the Way cannot be Found.

Adopting this Terence McKenna quote as his mantra and accidentally stumbling into what he calls "Thought Structure" through his art, blakeArt® (aka Matt Blake), with all his might and good intent, attempts to do just that: find a way for All. We are all "One" in the "Same," and he expands on that idea in this presentation (from PKN Chicago Vol. 18). PKN Guimaraes Vol. 3 Posters New on the Tumblr blog today are posters for PKN Guimaraes Vol. 3 (pictured above), PKN Springfield, Ohio Vol. 5, and PKN Cape Town Vol. 19.  PKN Buenos Aires Vol. 21 We've also added a few posters and flyers from PKN Buenos Aires that we hadn't come across in the past, including the flyer you see above, for the city's Vol. 21. PKN Buenos Aires Vol. 25 happens tonight. PKN Barcelona Vol. 16 Photos and video We have a few photo galleries to share today, including from the recent PKN Barcelona Vol. 16, which is what you see above. After the link, you'll also find a great video round-up from the event -- we sure love that "20th Century Fox" intro done PK-style.

Calendar Tonight (June 26) your PKN satisfaction will come from the following two events: PKN Amersfoort Vol. 7 and the previously mentioned PKN Buenos Aires Vol. 25. Tomorrow, on top of PKN Tokyo Vol. 93, you'll find PKN Kingston Vol. 3 and PKN Providence Vol. 39.

PKN Mendoza Vol. 3 Presentations Megg Evans is a Melbourne-based designer who co-founded Brolly Studios with Martin Heide and Stuart Webber. When she gave this presentation (from PKN Melbourne Vol. 19), her son Melvin was just 10 weeks old, and she brought him along and gave this beautiful 20x20 lullaby to her baby and the very impressed crowd. Fede Calandria's work could be described as a combination of art, design, and illustration. As he explains in this presentation (in Spanish, from PKN Mendoza Vol. 3), he finds inspiration everywhere, and likes to incorporate what he sees in his daily life, interpreting it in his own way. PKN Maribor Vol. 9 Posters We end the week with an explosion of posters on our Tumblr blog, with the following events being represented: PKN Guimaraes Vol. 3, PKN Memphis Vol. 1 and 2, PKN St. Albert Vol. 1, PKN Mallorca Vol. 1, and then PKN Maribor Vol. 9, which is pictured above. We sure love that Maribor tagline: "Come and meet our amazing guests. Creativity is their middle name ;-)" Below, a look at both sides of the flyer that was produced for last night's PKN Norwich Vol. 4. PKN Norwich Vol. 4 PKN Bilbao Vol. 12 Photos We like this spray painted crate we spotted here, located at the entrance of this past week's PKN Bilbao Vol. 12. Below, a look at the old school billboard entrance to the theatre where last night's PKN Winnipeg Vol. 10 was held. It's a quiet Saturday in PKN land, but Sunday will see PKN Pueblo Vol. 5.

Marking the Tokyo Cityscape, Being Kind to Your Elders, and Checking in on Guimaraes

PKN Tokyo Vol. 92 Presentations Here's how Nick Bruscia describes his presentation, "Marking the City," from last week's PKN Tokyo Vol. 92:

An impromptu and ad-libbed Tokyo fiction deriving meaning from a mundane observation -- street annotations and mysterious tags, both written and physically placed. It is imagined that these tags embed another layer of information into the city by casting invisible perimeters within which encoded experiences are left behind and felt by others through ubiquitous mobile / augmented-reality devices. Tokyo is remapped through visual and physical sensations that overlap, fade away, and are activated by the weather or proximity, and offer an ephemerality akin to Tokyo's ever changing urban fabric.

Our second presentation of the day is quite a different one. "Be kind to your elders" is a phrase we hear time and time again, and in "Building Bridges" (in Portuguese, from PKN Curitiba Vol. 1), Roseli Bassi talks about a project that has the goal of encouraging better interaction between young people and the elderly. PKN Toronto Vol. 16 Posters The new posters on our Tumblr blog today are for PKN Guimaraes Vol. 2, PKN Bucharest Vol. 9, PKN Moncton Vol. 5 (which happens tomorrow night), and PKN Toronto Vol. 16 (pictured above).  PKN Guimaraes Vol. 2 PKN Guimaraes Vol. 2 Photos and videos Today we take some time to share plenty of Guimaraes content, for the city's recent Vol. 2. As we just mentioned, the poster for the event was added to our Tumblr blog, and you'll also find two photo galleries, one with photos taken by Joao Octavio Peixoto (two of them are pictured above), and one by Luis Coelho and Joao Abreu [Facebook]. We already shared with you the promo video for the event (and we loved it so much we played it last week's PKN here in Tokyo), as well as the teaser, but here's also an intro for the presenters. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYd-HDj8roA And here's a lovely outdoor billboard ad for the event: PKN Guimaraes Vol. 2 Links A couple of event reports from around the web.

Calendar First, a reminder that tonight (June 6) you can catch the following events: PKN Coquitlam Vol. 7, PKN Bielefeld Vol. 10, PKN Genoa Vol. 2, PKN Aarhus Vol. 13, and PKN Edmonton Vol. 13. Tomorrow, look to these cities for some PKN satisfaction: PKN Eindhoven Vol. 2, PKN Moncton Vol. 5, and PKN Utrecht Vol. 4.

PKN Toronto Vol. 15 Presentations The first of our two presentations today, "Inside Wood and Paint: The Heart of Making," comes from PKN Taos Vol. 3, and sees Patti Tronolone sharing her paintings and furniture pieces, linking the latter to her love of nature. The second presentation is Kotama Bouabane's "Chinese's Replication of Orange County" (PKN Toronto Vol. 15) in which he reveals a Beijing suburb that was made to look like Orange County in California. PKN Lisbon Vol. 14 Posters We've got two new posters on our Tumblr blog today, one for this Sunday's PKN Lisbon Vol. 14 (above), and one for PKN Kumamoto Vol. 3, which is set for June 1. Photos We of course have a few new galleries to share with you today, but also a fantastic teaser video for the upcoming PKN Guimaraes Vol. 2, above (produced by Damnworks).

And we're not quite sure what the significance of the following photo is (from Flickr user Kalexandersen), but with the title "On stage for a PechaKucha," it felt natural to include it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kalexanderson/ Links A couple of PK-related links to keep you reading.

Calendar We covered in yesterday's post what you can expect from tonight in terms of events (5 PKNs), but for the weekend, Saturday (May 19) will see two Japanese series with new volumes, with PKN Kitakyushu Vol. 6 and PKN Nara Vol. 2. On Sunday (May 20), there's the aformentioned PKN Lisbon Vol. 14, as well as PKN Mendoza Vol. 4. For a peek at what next week has to offer, have a look at the full calendar.
