From "2nd Hand Scenery" from PechaKucha Night Glasgow Vol. 31Matthew Doolan presents 2nd Hand Scenery, a fledgling organization based in Glasgow that aims to find creative ways to help the Scottish entertainment sector reduce the amount of scenery, props, and furniture going to landfill once a production cycle has finished. 2nd Hand Scenery's primary goal is to connect the different elements of the industry with one another, to let the school drama club see what the National Company no longer needs and to facilitate the exchange, to let amateur dramatics groups share a show and to make it as easy as possible for companies and individuals to display their used items before they run out of time and space. 

It was founded by two scenic carpenters who after many years in the industry had become dismayed a the sheer volume of useful materials that are lost due to relentless production cycles and crushing time pressures inherent across the sector. So they decided that something had to be done about it.

Circular Economy

Lynne Wilson is currently the Sector Specialist -Textiles, Circular Economy Team at Zero Waste Scotland. Her role is to support innovation in design, manufacturing and production in the Scottish Textiles sector and to look at ways to close the loop and secure economic benefits through the development of new business ideas and products. Lynn is a Fellow of the RSA (Royal Society for the Arts and Engineering) and a Member of the Institute of Fundraising. Lynn was recently awarded a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship to visit Japan and explore circular economy textile technology, heritage and design.

Iulia Falcan shares the concept of circular economy, refering broadly to reducing waste as much as possible on one side, and developing long lasting and re-usable day-to-day products on the other, thus limiting the negative impact that waste has on the natural environment.  

The concept of circular economy encompasses many phenomena, of varying degrees of complexity, that allow even the most seemingly disengaged person to have a positive impact on the environment.

Dipping your toe into the sea of knowledge on ways towards environmental sustainability can be overwhelming. However, be assured that there are many small changes anyone can make that will have a positive impact!

若手新進建築家として活躍の目覚ましい斎藤隆太郎さんは、大手ゼネコン設計部を経て独立後、ご自身の事務所を設立して設計活動に取り組まれています。学生時代から現在に至るまで、所属された環境によって異なるデザインプロセスについて、手がけて作品とともに紹介してくださいます。

Young but up-and-coming architect, Ryutaro Saito despite starting his career in a large scale general contractor firm, has shaped his own independent practice to be design-focused. Visibly striking in all of the the projects he led, from his student days to the present, is the adaptive nature of the design process that alters according to the projects’ varying contexts.

Making Economy

TAKTAL is an agency that initiates the creative use of space. In 2015, TAKTAL established research platform Agile City to explore grassroots approaches to urban development. 

One of the outcomes of this project is Test Unit, an annual art, design and architecture Summer School. Its aims are to turn talk into action by prototyping ideas in public space. This year’s theme is Occupying the Post-Industrial City. More information can be found at agile-city.com/test-unit

Robert Patience has over 10 years experience studying and working within the design field. He is part of the design team at Fearsome, a Product Design & Engineering consultancy, as a Design Engineer with an emphasis on physical prototyping and making. Robert and his partner Carolyn Alexander also work part time at their start up Studio Moger. Here they are exploring the development of an open source library of artists equipment with their first project, Start Point.

The Art of Active Working Metaphors

To FVCC theatre professor Rich Haptonstall, set design is an "active working metaphor": not only does it have to be comparable and representative of real life, but it has to be a living, moving artform. As the three stories in this presentation demostrate, knowing how to use visual cues such as shape, color, and texture allow Haptonstall to illusrate the essence of the play and the characters therin.
