Bike-Powered Kinetic Sculpture

Ever ridden a crocodile bike? We thought not -- these two sculptors build them:

Raymond Rawls and Lorraine Duerden explore the potential for using abandoned, recycled bicycles as the foundation to create large-scale ambulatory kinetic sculpture. In "Bike-Powered Kinetic Sculpture" from PKN Gainesville, Vol. 10, they speak about the creation process of these animal-themed rideable sculptures, and the community parades where they put them on display.

PechaKucha GNV v10: Re(consider) The Bicycle

For the poster for Gainesville's PechaKucha GNV v10, organizer Anthony Rue looked back through the history of bicycle design to find a rather whimsical reinvention from the first decade of the 20th century for the anchor graphic. It teases out the theme of the evening's presentation, a re-imagening of the bicycle as a prism to view connections in our community.

PKN Posters: Gainesville Vol. 7

This prickly pear of a poster had its succulent simulacrum sent to your screen from gorgeous greater Gainesville, Florida. Taking place this Friday, April 5, is PKN Gainesville's Vol. 7 -- sure to be a sensational and serendipitous soiree!

What, you don't like alliteration?

To see more great posters from PechaKucha Nights all over the world, check out our Tumblr blog

PKN Curitiba Vol. 1 Presentations PKN Williamsburg organizer Dale Weiss is an architect who also has an eye for photography. This presentation (from PKN Williamsburg Vol. 2) forms a collection of some of his favorite non-building photographs and what makes these photos special to him. Tom Lisboa is an urban artist, and as we find out through his presentation (in Portuguese, from PKN Curitiba Vol. 1), he loves working with points of view, invisible polaroids, and urban interventions. PKN Vladimir Vol. 8 Posters We have two new posters on the Tumblr blog today: PKN Vladimir Vol. 8 (pictured above) and PKN Gainesville Vol. 5.  PKN Kuching Vol. 1 Photos There are of course PKNs of all sizes, and Kuching's first PKN last week had a modest start -- you'll find a few photos here [Flickr] -- but it generated a lot of love from the audience, who immediately asked when the next edition would take place (soon, we hope). It also got some great coverage from the Borneo Post -- we're certainly happy to have Kuching join the craze. Calendar Here are tonight's events, featuring two Vol. 1s: PKN Bari Vol. 1, PKN Albany Vol. 1, PKN Prague Vol. 30, PKN Kiruna Vol. 3, PKN Dallas Vol. 10, and PKN Stuttgart Vol. 8. Tomorrow, it's another big Thursday, with the following on tap: PKN Maastricht Vol. 15, PKN Blue Mountains Vol. 3, PKN Miami Vol. 17, PKN Hamptons Vol. 1, PKN Valencia Vol. 14, PKN Winnipeg Vol. 11, PKN Whangarei Vol. 14, PKN Malaga Vol. 1, and PKN Aarhus Vol. 14.

PKN Tokyo Vol. 93 Presentations Here's how Joachim Müller-Lancé describes his presentation (from last night's PKN Tokyo Vol. 93): "I've discovered a design conspiracy which plans to take over the world. They place secret signals everywhere, and I will present the evidence." Alen Amirkhanian teaches environmentally sustainable urbanism and engineering, and his presentation (from PKN Istanbul Vol. 14) is about compelling work done internationally to understand the human global impact on the planet. He also talks about work he is undertaking to address these global issues at a local level. PKN Gainesville Vol. 4 Poster There are no new additions to the Tumblr blog today, so instead we highlight the poster for tomorrow night's PKN Gainesville Vol. 4, which was added a few days ago.  PechaKucha Website Last night we had our 93rd PKN in Tokyo -- we'll have plenty of photos to share in about a week -- and we are currently in 537 cities. What you see above is a screenshot from the PechaKucha website 6 years ago, to the day, listing the PKN that was happening that night in Tokyo, Vol. 34. On the left-hand side, that's the entire city list as it stood in June 2006, all 14 cities. It certainly is amazing to think how far we've gone in such a short period of time. Calendar As we mentioned yesterday, it's a big Thursday, with the following events on tap: PKN Mallorca Vol. 1, PKN Bordeaux Vol. 7, PKN Geneva Vol. 7, PKN London Vol. 7, and PKN Vladimir Vol. 6. Tomorrow is another big night of events: PKN Edinburgh Vol. 18, PKN Fort Worth Vol. 6, PKN Wellington Vol. 14, PKN Gainesville Vol. 4, and PKN Springfield, Ohio Vol. 5.

PKN Sydney Vol. 21 Presentations In this presentation (from PKN Sydney Vol. 21) by Anna Lise de Lorenzo you'll find out all about &company, a project that gives emerging designers the opportunity to build their design experience within a creative community. They provide mentoring, facilitate production with local craftspeople and manufacturers, and take care of the marketing and distribution of the design. &company is on a mission to give designers a leg-up as they develop into capable and confident professionals. Not just for designers, the new Pop-Up premises in The Rocks invites anyone in to come and make something in the workshop, learn new skills in a class, or check out the work by their designers in the gallery and store. Poet and rapper Pablo Xavier suffers from schizophrenia, but he feels much better now. Through poetry and images, he explains how hard it has been. A very personal and touching presentation (in French, from PKN Lausanne Vol. 9). PKN London Vol. 7 Posters We have two new posters on the Tumblr blog today, first for PKN London Vol. 7 (pictured above), and then for PKN Gainesville Vol. 4, which are happening on June 28 and 29 respectively. PKN Brighton Vol. 11 Photos We have one set of photos to share with you today, taken at last week's PKN Brighton Vol. 11 -- you're seeing one of those photos above. Of course, you can always find plenty of other event photos on our PechaKucha Night Flickr account. Calendar Back from the weekend, you can start your week with tonight's PKN Rotterdam Vol. 30. Tomorrow (June 26), you can look for the following two events: PKN Amersfoort Vol. 7 and PKN Buenos Aires Vol. 25.

PKN Gainesville Vol. 3

And here's another photo we found today -- by Flickr user Yavelberg -- taken during this past Friday's PechaKucha Night in Gainesville Vol. 3. The event was held at Volta Coffee, Tea & Chocolate, and as you can see, even the staff was taking in the presentations. You'll find the full list of presenters on the official event page.

Poster for PKN Gainesville Vol. 3

A tranquil swampy landscape sets a reflexive tone -- at least according to the poster -- for next week's PechaKucha Night in Gainesville Vol. 3. It all happens January 29 at Volta Coffee and Tea -- you'll find the list of presenters on the official event page.

Flyer for PKN Gainesville Vol. 2

The city of Gainesville is all over the news right now -- and not for pleasant reasons -- but we do have a second PechaKucha Night to look forward to, set to happen September 24 at Volta Coffee & Tea.

Poster for PKN Gainesville Vol. 1

The first PechaKucha Night in Gainesville may have come and gone -- it was held this past Friday, on what we're hoping was a very lucky August 13 -- but we still wanted to share the great poster that was produced for the event. Nothing like a good hit of Kodak slide nostalgia. Here's also a piece about PKN's debut in Gainesville, from The Gainesville Sun.
