Don’t Just Sign on the Dotted Line: Assessing Fitness to Drive

PRESENTED ON SEP 02, 2015
IN BRISBANE @ VOL 42

“Nothing can bring the love of my life back. But if sharing our story indirectly results in one fewer person being injured by an unfit driver, at least some good has come out of this senseless tragedy.”

In “Don’t Just Sign on the Dotted Line: Assessing Fitness to Drive,” Dr. Genevieve Yates, a family physician from Australia, reminds us that driving is a privilege, not a right.

In July 2015, while visiting friends in LA, her partner was hit and killed while out jogging. Since he died, she has been trying to find things that are positive and helpful to make a very horrible situation feel a little less senseless. One of these is by raising awareness of the dangers of unfit drivers on the road, and she put together a PechaKucha to spread this important message.

She hopes that by sharing her personal story in this way, it might just result, indirectly at least, in someone’s husband, wife or child being spared.

07.13.08 - Here's What Happened...

BY STEFANY HOLLAND
@ VOL 4 ON FEB 11, 2016

Family is a big deal to Stefany Holland; so is letting people know how drunk driving can affect all human beings and their loved ones. One in every three people will be in some sort of drunk driving accident in their life time, and most alcohol-related car accidents that occur happen to only one car. On July 13, 2008, her family was directly affected by these very real statistics. The drunk-driving accident brought her family closer together, proving that when we pull together with our families, it makes stronger. Stefany has been passionate about sharing this story so that people can understand the real impact that drunk-driving has on us.

The Belt Line: Hiding in Plain Sight

BY CHRIS HAWLEY
@ VOL 16 ON APR 14, 2016

"The Belt Line … will be the next phase in Buffalo’s sustainable development."

In The Belt Line: Hiding in Plain Sight from PechaKucha Night Buffalo Vol. 16, urbanist and preservationist, Chris Hawley, presents the Belt Line -- one of the most conspicuous and least-known features of Buffalo, NY. Each day, trains go by along it and people drive underneath and over it. It is the "third strand" in Buffalo's DNA, as important to the city's physical and economic geography as Joseph Ellicott's radial and grid plan and Frederick Law Olmsted's park and parkway system; as consequential to the city's development as the Erie Canal and Interstate Highway System.

The Belt Line was opened in 1883, with segments dating back to 1836. The rail line is 15 miles long, forming a continuous loop through Buffaloʼs downtown as well as the prominent industrial loft clusters that it helped to create. Today, the Belt Line's 12 million square feet of largely vacant or underutilized industrial space is the city's next frontier for sustainable development. Factory buildings are being recycled as mixed-use developments. These former industrial areas are becoming walkable centers again.

This was "PechaKucha of the Day" on Tuesday, July 27th, 2016.

@ VOL 27 ON SEP 14, 2016

Public speaking might not be their strong point but these Travelling Sign Painters have gathered a small bead of success in their little business.  Mixing up their DMD education and love of graphic design and illustration they gathered an idea and it blossomed.  From a little cart being pulled from behind a 10-speed bike and buzzing around the city just making art and collaborting.  These two have definitely got a long way to go yet.
