Storage for Distorted Matter

BY LOEK GROOTJANS
@ VOL 5 ON FEB 28, 2013

Loek Grootjans (b. 1955 in Arnemuiden) collects and keeps a record of whatever touches him as an artist and a human being. In 2008 he launched Storage for Distorted Matter, a wide-ranging project that sets out to register and store life. Thus for many years the artist collected the dust in his studio, as well as Vincent van Gogh’s native soil; he also stored the water in which drowned bodies washed ashore on the Dutch island of Vlieland.

Fashion & identity

BY AYNOUK TAN
@ VOL 5 ON FEB 28, 2013

Want wie was zij nou eigenlijk?

My Life as an Illustrator

BY ARON VELLEKOOP LEÓN
@ VOL 5 ON FEB 28, 2013

Aron Vellekoop León (Fuerteventura, Spain 1987) is a graphic designer & illustrator, currently living and working in The Netherlands. His work is best described as a mix of symmetrical shapes, a plain usage of elementary colors
and reused textures. This basic recipe has led to a characteristic infographical 'handwriting' and an abstract way of storytelling. Being inspired by traditional printmaking techniques, Aron always stays close to that handcrafted look and feel.

A Nation Outside a Nation

BY NADINE STIJNS
@ VOL 5 ON FEB 28, 2013

Labour migration is part of the lifeblood of Filipinos around the world. Nearly 10 million people (10% of the population) have left the Philippines in search for work abroad. My partner is Filipino-American and for years I watched the small-scale migrations among his family in Southern California and the Philippines. These patterns are both visible and invisible: gifts are sent in gigantic boxes, money is returned and invested, new formations of friends and family are established in a foreign land, while Skype buzzes in the background with the sounds of home.

‘A Nation Outside a Nation’ captures these moments and movement in the Netherlands.
