Art With Other Species

PRESENTED ON OCT 09, 2015
IN ASHEVILLE @ VOL 9

"One of the themes that keeps drawing me back to this sorta work is that of technological augmentation. Some interspecies collaboration can begin to suggest to us what it might be like to be technologically augmented humans..."

In "Art with Other Species" from PechaKucha Night Asheville Vol. 9, Egg Syntax explores the artistic, scientific, and all-together fascinating intersection of an art crossbred with nature. He surveys examples, themes, and implications of interspecies art from the simplest notions of using another species as a medium, to that of collaboration with another species. Prepare to have your mind blown.

The Armadillo and Other Stories

BY BETTINA HUTSCHEK
@ VOL 3 ON JUN 20, 2014

Bettina Hutschek's artistic practice is set on multi-disciplinary research and thus generates various forms: essay films, book works or performances. Always based on observations from reality and on narrative practices, she juxtaposes layers of fiction and reality in order to create “transitory spaces” - these transits procreate mental spaces and mythological narrations. Put shortly: she tells stories.

"Presentation of the Day" on January 7, 2015.

Species of Space

BY ROBERT POWELL
@ VOL 33 ON APR 22, 2016

Robert Powell has long been interested in encyclopaedic and organisational forms. His practice explores representations of reality that are universal, yet constantly subverted as they are enmeshed in a web of cultural and personal memory, of national histories and myths, always with the covering cherub of art history looming above. This interest was also exemplified his recent solo exhibition in Quebec City entitled ‘A Universal History of Iniquity’, which the artist has described as ‘a universal history viewed through the prism of Borges’ Aleph relocated to a Stockbridge basement.’

Arternes Aarhus

BY NINA TOFTE HANSEN
@ VOL 34 ON SEP 13, 2017

"Arternes Aarhus" (ENG: "The species of Aarhus") is about giving a voice to all the species in the city of Aarhus, and not just the humans. Nina Tofte Hansen tells the quirky story of the species-ambassadors of Aarhus, and how other life forms are given consideration through these people. The audience is introduced to both the current Mole- and Dandelion-ambassador, and a tree - which is of course an Aarhusian as much as anybody else in the city.
