Festál Turns 20: A Reimagining, Powered by PechaKucha
Seattle Center Festál has hit quite the milestone—for the past twenty years, community groups from the greater Seattle area have been celebrating their cultures, histories, and identities in the form of ethnic festivals (i.e. arts, dance, music, food, workshops, and more.). But, of course, celebrating your people has deeper implications—community-driven ethnic festivals are about investigating who we are, who we have been, who we will become. The organization it takes to create this kind of gathering space makes us ask harder questions about how we find our power in the city, what do the emerging generations want from their origins and futures, what is at stake if we fail to re-affirm our identities as a people.
Festál Turns 20: A Reimagining wants young folks to consider and present on how they would organize and lead a cultural celebration of their community. This showcase will take the form of several PechaKucha-styled presentations. Themes include the following: Leadership, Community Organizing, Arts & Education, Language & Communication, and Intercultural Synergy.
"Powered by PechaKucha" events are one-off events that are separate from regular city-based PechaKucha Nights, and that are usually held as part of festivals and conferences, but can also act as standalone events. These events include presentations that use the PechaKucha 20 images x 20 seconds format."
